This compact tour has a lot going for it.  While it is true it is limited to only December, the chance to see so much of the major cities of the Danube and get the opportunity to visit 2 other very important cities in Central Europe, make it a good choice for folks with limited time who want maximum visits to the most important cities on the Danube.

With the emphasis on nightlife, it also should appeal to younger cruisers.

If you like Agatha Christie, the famous writer of intrigue and mystery, you probably have heard of her novel, Death on the Nile.  The novel is part of the series of Hercule Poirot, the clever detective who must solve a challenging murder plot in a complex web of lies, love, money and betrayal while on a steam powered river ship cruising the Nile.

So, let’s visit the Old Cataract, as we did, on an AmaWaterways 10-day Secrets of the Nile River Cruise and learn about the exotic place where she wrote this great novel.

A Little History of the Old Cataact Hotel

Built in 1899 in Aswan Egypt it is an excellent example of British colonial architecture.  It is a five-star property and is full of old-world charm and elegance.  If you are looking for glamor, and luxury that preserves the past indulgences of the rich, this is the place.

Built with great views of the Nile from most venues and rooms, it is just a stunning place.

We got to visit on an optional tour to take high tea here during our 10-day cruise tour..

Agatha Christie’s Stay Here

Ms. Christie stayed here in 1933 in room 1201 with her archaeologist husband Max Mallowan.  He was the second husband of Agatha Christie, as her first marriage ended in divorce in 1928. Agatha was a world traveler and the story of how she became married again was a result of meeting her second husband on one of her trips.

In 1928, she took the Orient Express to Istanbul and then later on traveled to Baghdad, where she met her husband Max.

She spent several months in the Middle East with her husband on his digs and often used this knowledge in her novels.

Her novel Death on the Nile was published in 1937 and has become the favorite of many of her fans world-wide.  Guiness World Records lists Agatha Christie as the best-selling fiction writer of all time, as her books have sold over 2 billion copies.

Folks who stay at the Old Cataract can join a tour of her room conducted daily at 1700 hours, but the important furniture is on display in the lobby area.  Here is a picture of the desk she used to write most of the novel:

Agatha Christie’s Writing Desk from room 1201

Abu Simbel

She also used an important Egyptian site in the novel—Abu Simbel.

Abu Simbel are 2 rock-cut temples which are dedicated to Ramesses II and his wife Nefertari. The hieroglyphics inside the temple commemorate the victories won at the Battle of Kadesh under Ramesses’ II leadership and other important Egyptian gods. The message was clear—Ramessess and his wife Nefertari were gods and should be worshiped by Egyptians..

In the novel, Death on the Nile, one of the characters narrowly escapes death from a falling stone pushed by one of the other characters in the novel, in an attempted muder.

Here are some pictures on the site, which was moved in 1968 to protect it during the building of the Aswan Dam.:

Abu Simbel with 4 statues of Ramesses II seated on the throne. The second sculpture was damaged during an earthquake and when relocated left as it was discovered. The statue on the left showes Ramessess II wearing the double crown of Upper and Lower Egypt.

Abu Simbel—this picture gives you some perspective on how large these statues are.

Nefertari’s Temple. It is unique in Egyptian History as only the second temple dedicated to a wife of a ruling pharaoh..

Scenic Squares You Can Visit on an AmaWaterways Cruise

Scenic Squares You Can Visit on an AmaWaterways Cruise

By Hank Schrader, USMA ’71, Europe Destination & Europe River Cruise Expert

Anne Schrader, Certified Travel Counselor & Certified Luxury Cruise Specialist

www.dreamdestinations.com

In almost every town in Europe, there is a square.  Squares have always been important to cities and their citizens.

AmaWaterways is running a free land extension promotion on new bookings made by 31 March 2024 on select cruises, and instead of telling you about all the sights of a city, I decided to provide a good look at the central hub of some of these destinations—their squares.

So, I thought you might enjoy hearing my thoughts and seeing some pictures about some of the most scenic squares in Europe you can visit on an AmaWaterways cruise.  There are so many, I will be sure to not be able to report on all of them, but this is a good start.

Are you ready for our personal square tour?

Why Squares Are Important

Town squares are a unique Europe innovation.

They go by many names, such as:  agora, forum, piazza, plaza, Platz, or market place

These town squares often are the most important place in a city.  Many have town halls located on them and are ringed by other buildings.  Most have restricted entrances, and are enclosed spaces which, in essence, makes it an outdoor building.

They helped cities develop a sense of community, often display culture items, important business buildings and foster democracy as a meeting place.  Most also have at least one important religious building, sometimes more.

Perhaps more importantly, this gathering place is an ideal venue to exchange ideas and viewpoints.  This area serves so many functions—people watching, political discussions, all sorts of markets, and fosters a sense of belonging because of these interactions.

Austria

Our first look at squares is in Vienna.  There are 3 important squares in this capital city.

The best-known square is St. Steven’s Plaza in Vienna.  It is a large square in the start of a pedestrian only zone in the heart of Vienna.  The soring church is one of the most iconic sights in all of Europe.  St. Stephen’s Cathedral is the symbol of Vienna—the amazing roof tiles proudly display the crests of the rulers and the Empire of Austro-Hungary.  The tower is 136 meters high and is the tallest church in Austria.

Maria Theresa Platz is a huge open area in the museum district.  It often hosts festivals and has a large Christmas Market area.  This area used to be the royal stables.  In the center of the Platz is the Maria Theresia Memorial statue.  Two great museums are here—the Kunsthistorisches is an art museum of world renown.  The Naturhistorisches displays examples of wildlife and insects of the world.

The Rathaus Square is another Christmas Markets favorite.  It is a magical place at night to visit among the crowded but friendly festival time.  During the summer, they often have outdoor movies for folks to enjoy.

10 of the 11 Danube cruises on the Danube visit Vienna, so there is ample opportunity to see some or all of these squares.

Linz has an important square that is very large.  The Hauptplatz (main square) is an impressive sight with a Trinty Column that is 20 meters high.  Trinty columns are an important symbol of gratitude for surviving disasters of fire, war, and plague.  Twice a week it becomes a lively food market and is another great Christmas marketplace.

Belgium

There are 3 great squares in this small country you can visit on an AmaWaterways cruises on the two northern cruise offered by AmaWaterways.

Antwerp is our first stop.  The Grote Markt square has an impressive town hall and the wonderful statue of Barbo.

Barbo statue.  According to the legend, a terrible giant, called Druoon Antigoon, lived on the banks of the river Scheldt.  He demand tolls, when refused he cut off the hands of offending sailors.  A Roman soldier, Silvius Brabo, killed the giant and by cutting his hand off, he ended his reign of terror.

With a legend like this, great place to visit!

Brugge is next up.

The best place to start are the two squares—Market square and Burg Square.  Markt (Flemish) or Market Square is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to the well preserved medieval buildings and famous belfry.  You can climb the 366 or so stairs for awesome views of the city but we prefer to listen to the bells from the ground of the square.

Burg Square houses the city hall and the Basilica of the Holy Blood (built by a Crusader to store drops of the blood of Jesus he brought back from Jerusalem).  You can easily see the wealth of this city at one time by studying the opulent, gilded buildings.  The city hall is a Gothic structure that was built in the late 1300s, making it the oldest town hall in Belgium.  Don't miss the upstairs Gotische Zaal (Gothic Room) with its ornate decor and wall murals depicting highlights from Bruges's history.  Most spectacular of all is the vaulted oak ceiling, dating from 1402, which features scenes from the New Testament.  Here are some photos of Burg Square:

Brussels is the 3rd square in Belgium.  The Grand Place (Grote Markt)—a fine medieval square—considered to be one of the most beautiful squares in Europe.  It is a pedestrian only zone, North West of Central Train Station.  The square has a daily flower market and a weekly bird market.  From April through September, there is a music and light show.

One of the buildings on the square is the Gothic Town Hall—the town hall was the only building left intact when the Grand Place was destroyed by the French in 1695.  On top of the slim tower on the hall, St. Michael, the patron saint of Brussels, protects the town.  Limited English tours (40 minute).  Admission charge for the tour.

My favorite building on the square is the Municipal Museum in King’s House—this is not a royal residence, but a civic museum.  It is located opposite the Town Hall across from the Grand Place.  Among its collections are 18th and 19th century ceramics and tapestries.  It also holds the collection of the costumes for Manneken Pis—that’s why I like this museum so much!

Czech Republic

In Prague, the wonderful Old Town Square is fun to visit.

Old Town Square-- famous for its historical monuments, Old Town Square is a Prague must-visit.  Climb to the top of the 660-year-old Old Town Hall Tower for spectacular views of the Baroque-style St. Nicholas Church (north corner of the square, it has a fine interior),

Gothic-style Church of Our Lady Before Tyn (twin towers) and Old Town itself.

The Astronomical Clock (Orloj)--on the side of the Tower--consists of an astronomical dial embellished with zodiac symbols, a calendar dial and colorful, moving sculptures.  As the clock chimes, biblical figurines come out, and spectators may watch the "Walk of the Apostles."  An hourly bell toll features a figurine representing death.  The clock comes to life from 0900 to 2100.

On the square is the Church of St. Nicholas--There are plenty of impressive Baroque churches in Prague, but the St. Nicholas church at the Old Town Square is one of the most beautiful thanks to the colorful frescoes, intricate ironwork and stucco that decorate the interior.

Old Town Hall--Prague's old Town Hall was built in 1364. The astronomical clock in the town hall's tower is one of the city's most popular tourist attractions.  Originally the building served only as the city hall of the old town, but later became the city hall for all of Prague.  It is now only used for ceremonial functionsHopefully the renovations are complete now, as it was covered up on my last visit.

We have visited several times, and led tours here at all times of the year.  It never gets old—especially during the Christmas markets.

France has many important squares, but I’d thought I would just highlight a few.

Paris has many important squares but perhaps the most impactful is the Place de la Concorde.  It is the largest square in France.  It does have a dark history—it was the site of many public executions during the French Revolution.  Actually, the name of the square changed to Place de la Revolution during this period of unrest and rebellion.  Among the notables executed were —King Louis XIV. Marie Antoinette and Maximillien Robespierre.  According to Wikipedia, 1,119 were guillotined in this square.

Bordeaux has a large square with a very large fountain.  The name of the square is Place des Quincoces.  It has two 21-meter rostral columns which symbolize commerce and navigation.

A magnificent sculpture in the square is the Girondists monument, in memory of the Girondists who were killed during the Reign of Terror of the French Revolution.  Today it is an important transportation hub in Bordeaux.

Strasbourg on the Rhine River cruises has a large square around the massive cathedral.  Cathedral Square is an important area in the old town area and always an interesting stop for shopping, eating, and visiting the massive cathedral.

Germany

4 great squares make my list in Germany you can visit during many cruises on the Rhine and Main Rivers.  While there are squares, I want to highlight 4.

Let’s begin with Freiburg

Münsterplatz is a cobblestone square in front of the Freiburg Münster (Cathedral of Freiburg). This quaint churchyard has plenty of colorful buildings, most of which were reconstructed following the end of WW II.  Besides the church, the Historical Merchants' Hall and Wentzinger House are some of the many historical buildings within the square.

Münstermarkt Freiburg is an open-air farmer’s market that takes over most of Münsterplatz.  Normally, there are about 65 stalls selling fresh flowers, fruits and vegetables, and food items such as pastries, wines, and sausages.  There are vendors selling woven baskets and other items.  We bought some wonderful wooden utensils during one of our visits.

Next up is Munich

Marien Platz—old town square, since 1158, is the place to gather in Munich.  It is host to many festivals, and markets, especially the Christmas markets.  It has a famous glockenspiel (1908), which performs at 1100 and 1200 all year.  The story is of a 1500 wedding, of a Bavarian Duke (blue & white) and his French bride (red & white), knights and celebrations.  The inspiration for this unique device is that jousting tournaments used to be held in the square.

In the center of the square is a statue dedicated to the Virgin Mary.

Nuremberg also ranks high with me.  The Market Square is a place of constant activity.  It is home to one of the best Christmas market in all of Germany.

If not being renovated, the Schoner Brunnen--the Beautiful 19 meter Fountain on the edge of Market Square is quite impressive.  There are two rings on the fence that are some popular legends about the power of the fountain.  One is that if you turn the “golden ring” and make a wish, it will come true. The black ring, is said to bless women with children.

The market also has an impressive church on the square.  Church of Our Lady constructed as an imperial royal chapel.  Every day at noon the "Männleinlaufen" (mechanical clock and glockenspiel) chime to the delight of watchers below.

I can’t miss one of my personal favorites—the town square in the walled city of Rothenberg.

The picturesque buildings surround the square, and the highlight is the Town Hall and its astronomical clock.  The legend here is the mayor who saved the town from destruction by Swiss by Imperial General Tilly—Master Draught—he drank a3 ¼ litters of wine in one gulp (ok, he chugged it) and won the bet to save the city in October 1631.

Hungary

In Budapest, there are 2 important squares to visit near the Danube.

The first is the Holy Trinty Square on the Buda side that is protected by the Fisherman’s Bastion.  The square has an important Trinty Column in tribute to the people who died from the Black Plague—some estimates claim from 30% to 60% of all European died during the plague from 1691 to 1709.  Matthias Church with is ornate roof is also located here.

Heroes Square--The monumental square at the end of Andrássy Avenue sums up the history of Hungary by displaying statues that honor Hungary’s heroes.  The millennium memorial commemorates the 1000th anniversary of the arrival of the Hungarians in the Carpathian Basin.  The Museum of Fine Arts and the Palace of Fine Arts are also located on this square.  It is the entrance to the City Park.  It is on the Pest side.

While not as important as these other two squares, the Jozsef Nador Square is one of the important Christmas Markets stop and we have visited them several times.

Vorosmarty Square has an important landmark in Budapest—the Gerbeaud Café is famous for its handmade desserts and is an elegant old-world coffee and dessert café.  It opened in 1858 and has been a favorite of Budapest ever since then.

You can visit most of these place on a post or pre tour if you have not seen them during your cruise.

Romania

The city of Brasov in Romania is square that I really enjoyed.  The main square of Brasov is a great place to see people, eat and enjoy the buildings around this area.  Town Hall Square has colorfully painted and ornately trimmed baroque structures.  Perhaps the most famous sight is the Black Church, the largest gothic church in Romania.  Its name comes from damage caused by the Great Fire of 1689, when flames and smoke blackened the walls of the church.  The interior of the church is well kept and houses one of the largest organs in Eastern Europe.

You can visit Brasov as a pre/post land excursion on any AmaWaterways lower Danube cruises.

Our Final Thoughts

Wow—I hope you enjoyed this tour as much as I enjoyed writing it!

This is an amazing collection of squares but by no means the only one’s worth seeing in Europe.  The hardest part of writing this was whittling down to a manageable number.  AmaWaterways offers many great options to see these squares and their current promotion is an excellent value you might want to consider,

You might get tired of us telling you about their wonderful cruise line and why you should travel on it, so we have two unbiased friends, Little Bear and Lenny the Leopard, although very shy, to help us—they have agreed to tell you about the wonderful folks at AmaWaterways.

They have even decided to let you see their pictures on several river cruise ships and to tell you why the folks on AmaWaterways are special.

Both would also like to tell you about why they think the AmaMagna is the best rivership they have sailed on in Europe—and wanted you to see Den Mother Anne’s pictures of all the staterooms, so you might select the right den for your next cruise on the AmaMagna.

Leadership

Little Bear and Lenny knew about the warm leaders of AmaWaterways but weren’t quite sure if it was okay to meet them in person, as they think they aren’t very important, and these are busy, and important folks.  But they found out how friendly and welcoming these key leaders are to all—even to our friends Little Bear and Lenny (they told us you would be treated the same way).

They just wish they could have met more folks, but sometimes, it is just too much for them to handle and they have to go back to the den.

Lenny the Leopard and Little bear enjoy a special drink made just for them on the AmaMagna

Lenny and Little Bear like to relax just before sleepy time—they like their nightcap drinks.

Here are some of the wonderful leaders they met:

Kristin Karst, with her sparkling smile and instant warm manner, greets all with the pride and love she has for those who river cruise with AmaWaterways.  She is the co-founder of AmaWaterways and strives to make all who sail with her company surprised and delighted with their luxury vacation.  They were so excited to meet her—they even ask for a photo so they could remember the occasion:

Alex Pinelo is the VP of Sales, and very well respected in the travel industry.  He loves working for AmaWaterways and always finds time to respond to all, despite his busy schedule.  He is a passionate fan of AmaWaterways.

Alex enjoyed the company of Little Bear and Lenny

Diane Marie Horan has been working for AmaWaterways since 2011—our friends Hank and Anne met her early during their first trips on AmaWaterways.  She is the director of Strategic Accounts and loves AmaWaterways—she has even written a book of how AmaWaterways seems to create lifelong love connections among the employees.  Little Bear and Lenny love her book and rejoice in the stories she wrote about to share with others.

Jazzmine Douse is the Director of National Accounts for AmaWaterways.  Smart, vivacious, and full of energy, she helps bring an enthusiastic dynamic to AmaWaterways, helping all to enjoy these great vacations, especially to help diversify the clientele on AmaWaterways, where all are welcome.

Little Bear Sometimes Ventures Out With Shy Lenny During the Day

Little Bear is very curious. He likes people, especially if he can learn more about their jobs. He especially likes seeing how the ship is steered, and how many warm, welcoming staff he can meet.

He got his Den Mother to take him out one day on the AmaMagna, with Lenny. It was very important to him to let you see these wonderful people, who take such great pride in their jobs, who wanted their pictures made with him.

Little Bear Sometimes Goes Out on his Own

Little Bear likes to tour, especially if he can meet his other bear cousins in Europe. He most often gets to do it on an AmaWaterways ship, but sometimes he goes out during the pre or post trips. He wanted us to share some photos of him in action, before he goes to hibernate until his next trip.

Before his Christmas Markets cruise in December 2023, Little Bear cuddled with Lenny in Regensburg. He loves the Christmas Markets, but sometimes it is too cold for Lenny to go out.

Little Bear on the Treasures of the Main and Rhine Route in the summer of 2022.

While most folks would think that in Rothenberg is very picturesque, Little Bear was more thrilled to meet his giant cousin. He was proud his cousin lives in such a great place that lots of folks like to visit.

While this is a beautiful medieval town to tour, and it is very easy to do on the included tours on an AmaWaterways cruise, Little Bear liked the visit, but really liked meeting his cousin bear more.

Why They Like the AmaMagna Staterooms so Much

Little Bear and Lenny really felt safe, loved, and respected on the AmaMagna, as they have on other AmaWaterways 135m and 110m ships.  They especially like the cozy staterooms, that are elegant, yet so functional.  Both decided to share with you why it is a perfect den for them and for you.

Before we tour some of the staterooms on the Magna, Little Bear wanted you to see his sleeping bag, so here is a picture of him ready for a nap. He didn’t want to hibernate on his trip, because there is so much to do during the cruise on the included tours, so he was very careful to sleep well, but not sleep for the whole 7-day Upper Danube Cruise!

Little Bear in his sleeping bag—it is warm and cozy for him.

Little Bear wants you to see the different staterooms, so here they are:

Here is what the Grand Stateroom (474 square feet, GS category) looks like from Anne’s pictures:

Better Than an AmaWaterways Brochure

Perhaps you would wonder why we think we have a resource better than an AmaWaterways brochure or even their route descriptions online.  The reason is really very simple—we have decided to provide you a comprehensive day-to-day itinerary of every route offered by AmaWaterways in Europe with our pictures of the port stops.

To say the least, this has been a huge undertaking but it really is necessary to provide you the best possible, current information on the routes offer by our favorite river cruise company.  While it is not totally complete, we have finished 24 of the routes and all the rest are in draft form, so in a couple of weeks or so, this will be completely finished.

These guides are a report of our 23 Europe River Cruises with AmaWaterways and experiences of traveling to Europe for 51+ years.  By my count, there are 31 different routes offered in 2023 in Europe by AmaWaterways.  We have sailed on all rivers with AmaWaterways except the Seine and Douro (most multiple times).  And even though we have not sailed these two rivers, we have experience in both Normandy (ok, we led two tours the 70th and 75th Anniversary of D Day) and Portugal, we have visited the sites of the pre-trip land package.

Overview

There are at least 20 to 45 or so pictures in each presentation—almost all ours—as you know, Anne, our company president, and my boss, is an amazing photographer and she is responsible for most of these photographs!

Our last cruise was on the Danube in 2022 for the start of the Christmas Markets—it was very cool to experience these markets again, after they were cancelled during most of 2020 and 2021.  We are going this month to a river cruise expo in Budapest and will have the chance to sail on the AmaMagna—more chances for us to excel with new presentations.

So, let’s explore together and learn about our newest resource to better help you decide if this is the right company for your trip and the details of each route.

How We Organized this New Material

You will find 4 new pages on our website.  Each new page is organized around a major Europe River system, which makes it a little easier to find a route or cruise that may be the perfect fit for your next vacation.  It will also let you dream of a new trip that is possible with a cruise line that never disappoints.

To help you learn a little about this great new resource, I will feature one route of each section, so you can get an idea of the quality of these presentations.

AmaWaterways Danube Cruises (page link AmaWaterways Danube Cruises )

AmaWaterways offers 11 different routes on the Danube.  9 are completed, one is in draft form and the Grand Danube is a combination of two routes already completed, so I chose to create this one last.

I have chosen this route as a good representation of this section.

The Watchman of the Wachau—this is one of my favorite pictures taken by Anne but it is hard to chose from the more than 5,000 she has taken and we get to share with you.

AmaWaterways French Cruises (page link AmaWaterways French Cruises )

There are 5 routes in this page.  2 are completed, one will be posted shortly and 2 are in draft form.  I have chosen this route as a good representation of this section.

This is the AmaKristina that sails the Colors of Provence Route

AmaWaterways Main Moselle and Rhine Cruises (page link AmaWaterways Main, Moselle and Rhine River Cruises )

There are 7 routes on this page.  All 7 routes are completed.  I have chosen this route as a good representation of this section.

Lahneck Castle Tour—an AmaWaterways exclusive!

AmaWaterways Rhine Cruises (page link AmaWaterways Rhine Cruises )

There are 6 routes on this page.  All 6 are completed.  I have chosen this route as a good representation of this section.

Lucerne—it is our 2nd favorite town in Europe!

AmaWaterways Douro Cruises

This page is not live yet but will feature the 2 routes offered.

Our Final Thoughts

This has been a true labor of love—that’s what Ama means--love.  It was very important to update older presentations and create new ones, so you have an easy way to learn more about the routes offered and to help you really understand the value AmaWaterways brings to their guests.

We hope you enjoyed this report.

Danube Christmas Markets on AmaWaterways in 2022

Danube Christmas Markets on AmaWaterways in 2022

Hank Schrader, USMA '71, Europe Destination & Europe River Cruise Expert

Anne Schrader, Certified Travel Counselor & Certified Luxury Cruise Specialist

www.dreamdestinations.com

This is a report of our 23rd Europe River Cruise.  We are back on the Danube and it is just the start of the Christmas Markets after being cancelled during most of 2020 and 2021.

So, let’s explore together and learn about Christmas Markets in 2022 on the Danube and in Southern Germany.

What are the Christmas Markets?

In Europe, many squares are used for various street markets.  At Christmas time, these squares are transformed into one unique blaze of color, goods and foods from small vendors.  It is a social gathering where hot mulled wine, beer and street food are served and all seem to get along as they browse the various vendors.

Christmas markets date back to 1300 or so and started in Germany, Austria and the eastern portion of France.  The season usually starts about November 25 and lasts until 23 or 24 December, roughly following the Advent 4 week season.  Even for a person like me who does not really like shopping, this is so much fun that everyone should try this at least once.  Unlike American Malls, this is not combat shopping and crowds of hassled folks; this is a gathering of folks socializing with food and drink, music, and buying gifts at a much gentler pace.

Seeing the decorations alone is worth the trip but many booths have handmade items that are unique and priceless.  Most sell only on cash, so make sure you have enough local currency to get your purchases.  And, as we have learned though our own mistakes, if you see something you like, buy it or you will often miss out.  Most markets open around 10:00 AM and close around 9:00 PM but it varies a lot and it is not uncommon for booths to close down for short periods to take a break or get something to eat or an owner to take a day off and not open their booth.

As long as you dress warmly, these markets offer a cultural experience second to none—it is an experience not to be missed!

Munich

Before the start of our cruise, we visited the Christmas Markets in Munich. It was overcast, sunny then thunder showers. Right after it rained, we got this picture of the Christmas Markets in front of the new Rathaus with a rainbow over it.

Budapest

Traditional Hungarian Christmas Cake Flodni in Budapest—picture from Mark Thomas who traveled on the 2022 cruise with us along with his wonderful wife Denise, our travel chums!

Another picture of the markets taken by Mark Thomas.

Bratislava

This capital city of Slovakia is a great gathering place at night for folks during the Christmas Market season, as you can see from this picture.

Vienna

We visited 3 Christmas Markets in Vienna. We took the excellent subway system out to the markets at Schönbrunn Palace. The first 2 pictures are of this excellent market.

The next 2 pictures are at the markets around St. Stephen’s Cathedral.

Passau

The markets in Passau are among our favorites—we always seem to find great gifts here in this small market.

Nuremberg

Nuremburg is famous as one of the best and biggest Christmas Markets in Germany. Here are some pictures:

The famous Nuremburg sausages on the grill.

Regensburg

Our favorite Christmas Market is in Regensburg. It is on the grounds of the Thurn & Taxis palace grounds. The next 4 pictures are of the wonderful market—we highly recommend you visit it.

Across the famous stone bridge is a market that features a lot of good food and drink—it was small and packed with folks having a good time.

No trip to Regensburg would be complete unless Anne got a new hat from the Hutkonig. It is her 7th.

Our Final Thoughts

The Christmas Markets in Europe are special—we highly recommend you enjoy them on a visit to the Old World. We have have enjoyed them at least 6 times and plan to return—they are that much fun.

We hope you enjoyed this report.

AmaWaterways Land Extension Promotions in Europe for 2023

AmaWaterways Land Extension Promotions in Europe for 2023

Hank Schrader, USMA '71, Europe Destination & Europe River Cruise Expert

Anne Schrader, Certified Travel Counselor & Certified Luxury Cruise Specialist

www.dreamdestinations.com

AmaWaterways currently has an excellent offer.  It is called the Complimentary Land Package.  The package includes a free 2-3-or 4-night land package.  The promotional package ends on 31 December 2022 and is available on many 2023 sailings.

I have included the normal cost of the land extension to help you see the amazing value of this promotion.

So, I thought I’d write about the different land extensions available and a little bit about the cities included.

Benefits of the Complimentary Land Package

  • The package includes the following:

  • Stays in 4- or 5-star hotels near the major sights

  • Daily breakfast

  • Guided tours and excursions

  • Transfers between your hotel and the ship

  • All packages include an on-site cruise manager to assist you

Featured Land Packages

There are many options here and it is beyond the scope of this blog to include every sailing.  However, never fear, I will organize the land package options by the river and tell you a little bit about each extensions that are available, using our pictures and guides, so you can see if one option is available to enhance your river cruise to take advantage of this promotion.

Rhine

On the Rhine, there are 3 land package options available.  They are:

Amsterdam (valued at $1,190 per person)

A land of bikes, canals, and a free-wheeling culture, we have visited Amsterdam several times and escorted folks there.  This is a city of 165 ringed canals, a population of 750.000 (it has as many bikes as people) and always full of tourists.  It is the capital of the Netherlands, with two world class art museums.  It is a major port, once the wealthiest city in the world, and residents and visitors live with a tolerant atmosphere.  On this 2-night extension you will have a walking tour of the city and a visit to either Haarlem or Zaanse Schans.

Skinny Bridge Amsterdam

Lucerne and Zurich (valued at $1,680)

You will spend 2 nights in Lucerne and 2 nights in Zurich.  The Zurich portion includes a guided tour of the old town area.  In Lucerne, a visit to the alpine old town area, a visit to the Lion Monument and a scenic cruise on Lake Lucerne are some highlights of this extension.

Old Town Zurich

Lucerne

Lake Como (valued at $1,440 per person)

Lake Como, in the Northern area of the Lakes Region of Italy is a place of spectacular scenery.  Included in this extension is a scenic boat ride on Lake Como to the stunning port of Bellagio.

Danube

On the Danube, 4 land extensions are available.  They are:

Prague (valued at $1,320 per person)

The city of 100 spires is fascinating and interesting—good sights and bohemian culture, make it one of our favorites in Europe.  Prague is organized into 4 quarters and most folks spend their time in the Castle Quarter and Old Town Square area.  On this extension, you will get to visit Prague Castle, cross the St, Charles Bridge, visit Old Town and see the famous Astronomical Clock and get to taste Czech beer.  On the way to the ship, you will get a stop in Regensburg during the transfer.

Prague Castle

Regensburg

Budapest ($840 per person value)

Perhaps the most stunning city on any river cruise, Budapest is 2 cities rolled into one.  By far the most impressive city on the Danube, Budapest, the capital of Hungary, is a town we love to visit.  It is really two towns—the high town of Buda that overlooks the banks of the Danube and Pest on flat land.  They are united by several bridges, but the Chain Bridge is the most important and is a symbol of the city.  Both sides have some awesome structures—among them Buda Castle and Fisherman’s Bastion (Buda side) and the Parliament building (Pest side).  Once you visit, you will want to come back.

Buda Castle and the Chain Bridge

Vienna (valued at $980 per person)

Vienna is a true treasure—the importance of this city on history cannot be overstated—it once was the capital city of the Hapsburg Empire of Austria-Hungary.  Palaces, great museums, great shopping, and good food make this an easy choice for an extension.  This package is a 2-night extension.  It features an “Imperial Vienna tour.”

Romania (valued at $1,800 per person)

You will spend 2 nights here in Bucharest and 2 nights in Brasov.  Bucharest is known as the “Paris of the East.”  We visited it as part of our Black Sea voyage on AmaWaterways.

Brasov is one of the best cities in Romania.  Your tour will start in Sinaia at the Peles Royal Castle on your way to Brasov.  On day 2 you will tour Brasov and visit the birthplace of Dracula in Sighisoara.  Next, is a visit to Dracula’s Castle in Bran.  Then off to Bucharest for a tour.

Peles Castle

Bran Castle

Parliament of the People Bucharest

Vliad Statue

France

On French River Cruises, the main land extension is Paris, but some new extensions are available.

Paris (valued at $1,340 per person).

This 2-night land package has excursions to Montmarte and Atelier des Lumieres.  The extension starts with a city tour of the city of lights.

Mont St. Michel.

Douro

Prior to the 7-day cruise on the Douro, you will have a wonderful 3-day land extension in Lisbon.

Lisbon (valued at $1,380 per person).

This land extension spends 3 nights in Lisbon before the 7-night Douro cruise.  Lisbon is the capital of Portugal and is located on the Tagus River.

Key sights include the Alfama (oldest section of the city, with a Moorish feeling, has cobblestone streets and white-washed houses), St. George’s Castle, and the Tower of Belem.

The land extension includes a tour of the city of 7 hills, the excursion to Sintra to visit Pena Palace, a visit to Tomar Castle, and the transfer to Porto for the cruise.

We just finished escorting some great clients on an AmaWaterways river cruise.  The route was the Essence of Burgundy & Provence.  In Burgundy, I took a tour to the famous Hotel Dieu.

This stunning place was a medieval charity hospital.  It was commissioned and paid for by Nicolas Rolin, the chancellor of Burgundy and his wife, Guigone de Salins.  Construction started in 1443 and was completed 8 years later.

So, let’s explore together and learn about one of the best-preserved medieval buildings in France,

Overview

By the time of the construction of the hospital, the people of Burgundy were suffering from the Black Death (plague) and the religious Hundred Years War.  Estimates were that 75% of the population were destitute and many were sick.

There were few opportunities for health care during these times, so this is a rather unique facility.

The Courtyard

The tiled roof and courtyard area are just stunning.  The glazed tiled roof was a symbol of prestige and wealth and these colorful patterns have earned an architectural style that has become to known as “Burgundian”.  Here are some photos:

The amazing inter courtyard area

Notice the quality of the workmanship—very intricate

The workmanship is excellent and the details are everywhere

The inside courtyard, where the entrance leads to the Great Hall of the Poor

The entrance to the Hotel Dieu

The Pauper’s Ward (The Great Hall of the Poor)

It might be hard to understand how innovative this place was in the middle ages.  Normal care came by doctors visiting the sick at their homes, but few could afford care at home.

This is the largest room of the building.  Each bed held 2 or more persons (our guide told us men and women were often placed in the beds together—I guess if you must go it might be nice to have a little pleasure first).  This practice ended in 1658 when King Louis XIV (the Sun King) donated enough money to separate men and women.

This was not a place of recovery; it was a place for the poor to die as peacefully as possible and there were constant reminders of salvation awaited the faithful. Today we would call this a hospice.  Here are some pictures:

The Great Hall of the Poor

More of the bed area—there are 28 beds in this part of the hospital for the poor

The stained-glass windows let the world know that the two patrons are included in the art provided this place for the poor.

This was award for more wealthy patients who might have a better chance of surviving.

Notice the difference in the more wealthy area of this hospital—the paintings are more about hope and recovery than the Great Hall of the Poor

Pharmacy

The nuns who staffed the hospital grew herbs in the second courtyard area gardens and these medical remedies were stored in pottery jars.

Treasured Art Works

Among the magnificent art works on display are the Story of Jacob, The Last Judgement by Roger van der Weyden’s painting of the Last Judgement (Flemish artist), and the Prodigal Son tapestry.

He cut the horses’ leg off, shod the severed leg and then performed a miracle by reattaching the leg back on the horse, who was now demon free.

Burgundy Wine

The hospital is supported in part by a 60-acre wine vineyard.  There is a wine auction at the Hotel Dieu in November, that is famous for the barrels of high-quality wine sold (Sotheby’s organizes and conducts the auction).  It raises significant money to help preserve this great museum and important historical site.  It is the most famous wine charity auction in the world.

The wine is primarily Pinot Noir, with some chardonnay.  The exceptional vineyard is premiers’ crus and grand crus—the best wine produced in this region.

Why We Pick AmaWaterways as Our # 1 River Cruise Line

Why We Pick AmaWaterways as Our #1 River Cruise Line

Hank Schrader, USMA '71, Europe Destination & Europe River Cruise Expert

Anne Schrader, Certified Travel Counselor & Certified Luxury Cruise Specialist

www.dreamdestinations.com

As you may know, we are always being asked to differentiate between the various river cruise companies.  All 7 lines we follow offer great vacations and will provide most of their guests a better vacation than many other options.  I like to say, there is no bad river cruise, they are all wonderful vacations and a superb choice to experience Europe.

But when you are spending north of $10,000 for a 7-day cruise for 2, many folks want to know how the various lines compare and if one line might provide better quality and value for their vacation.

So, let’s explore this together and learn about why we pick AmaWaterways as our #1 river cruise line by examining 6 factors we consider important to help us make our selection.

Overview

Perhaps you might wonder why our opinion matters and what credentials we have to make this rating.  Since we specialize in European River Cruising, we have studied this vacation in depth after our first river cruise in 2009.  We have been on 21 river cruises (always having to pay unlike many travel writers who go for free) and will take 2 more this year in 2022.  We have sold river cruises on 5 of the 7 lines we follow to dozens of delighted clients.

We have led 10 groups on river cruises.  We have written over 100 blogs about river cruising.  We have the number one Google article about comparing 7 river cruise companies—over 16,131 have found it on the internet from 2020 to present as of 8 June of 2022.  We make every effort to provide as many facts as possible in this 87 PDF slide presentation and clearly provide sources or tell you it is our opinion.  We have written port guides to 51 different European River Ports.

We use all of this knowledge and experience to evaluate all 7 lines and try to match you to the right line if you decide to use us as your travel advisors.

A Summary of Why AmaWaterways is # 1

I think I really understand what makes an organization perform at the highest levels.  It is a combination of good leaders, staff that care and do their job in a superb manner and a fantastic product (great food and wine, luxury accommodations and well-designed excursions and experiences).  AmaWaterways is this and more.

So, now, let’s examine 6 factors that we would like you to consider when selecting a river cruise company for your vacations and see how AmaWaterways rates.

They Provide Unique Experiences

Our clients and potential clients want options when they travel.  They want to interact with different cultures.  AmaWaterways really delivers many unique experiences on their fleet of 25 ships.

In every port, you can expect to have 2-3 or more excursions that are included in the cruise fare.  They are tours that delight—small groups led by knowledgeable guides, organized by pace (gentle, regular, fast, and even late-risers) that help you experience a destination, not just see it.  But even this is not enough—they also shine in unique experiences.

Here are just two examples:

They excel in Special Interest Tours.  These tours are specially designed to give small groups an opportunity to be even more immersed in the places they are visiting.  Best of all, these tours are included in the cruise fare—there is no extra charge!  Popular options include a Belgian waffle and chocolate tasting in Antwerp, a beer and sausage tour in Nuremberg, or a chance to see Vienna’s hidden treasures, like the romantic Schönlaterngasse.

We have done the waffle tasting and the sausage and beer tour—both were awesome!

Belgian waffle and chocolate tasting in Antwerp

Hank enjoys a beer and sausage tour in Nuremberg—these are the famous Nuremberg sausages which are wonderful grilled

Anne also helped make a traditional pierogies in Bratislava—it was a fun experience.

Anne cooking in Bratislava

We have had clients participate in the Vienna tour and they really liked it (one great benefit for us—we discovered a great schnitzel restaurant which we managed to eat at because of their tour—it was the largest schnitzel I’ve ever seen, and just melted in our mouths—a neat experience!).

Special Interest Tours are also a great option for a cruiser who is sailing on the same route a second or third time—it provides a new experience that enhances your trip.  Along with the Bratwurst and beer tasting at the oldest brewery in Nuremberg described above, here are 2 other unique culinary experiences:

Learning how to knot a bretzel (German for pretzel) at a German bakery

Sampling regional specialties at the Les Halles market in Lyon (we have been on this tour—it is excellent).

Les Halles market in Lyon

They have over 60 special wine cruises each year—the most of any river cruise line.

One of our 2 Travel Chums,, Mark Thomas preparing for the Ledson Wine Cruise with the staff.

Hank during on of the wine tasting sessions

There are also wonderful wine tasting events during excursions like we enjoyed together on our Colors of Provence cruise

AmaWaterways likes to say that they “Personalize Every Step of Your Journey.”  We completely agree.

Casual but Elegant Luxury

Lifestyles have changed to more casual approach, but many still want refined experiences during their travels.  Although no formal attire is the norm on their ships, the accommodations are elegant without being over the top.  It truly is a 5-star floating hotel.

The lounge area

There is a small outside area at the bow of the ship

The wonderful reception area and staff. The area is manned 24 hours a day.

There are 2 wine room dining areas on the 135 meter ships.

Many of the staterooms have twin balconies, with a French Balcony (sliding glass door) and a full outside balcony that Anne and I often enjoy a bottle of wine during our cruises.

Twin Balcony Inside view

An outside balcony sitting area

There are nice touches like the “Sip & Sail” included cocktail hour.

The vibe is friendly but sophisticated yet with full modern comforts.  Other venues on the ship reflect the same attention to detail as the staterooms.

Excellent Cuisine

The food on AmaWaterways has always been rated as the best by many travel writers and industry folks who evaluate river cruises.

The main dining room serves most of the meals you will eat on board these river ship.  Breakfast and lunch used to be buffet style with options to order off the menu, but now all items are served to guests.

Most days I select the Eggs Benedict along with complimentary unlimited sparkling wine and fresh juices to start my day.  All breads are freshly baked every day and they even make homemade ice cream for dessert at lunch.

Every evening on the dinner menu (a 4-course affair of an appetizer, a soup or salad course, a main course and dessert), there are 3 Entrée’s choices—usually a meat dish, a fish dish, and a vegetarian option—all are excellent! Here are some of our meals—they were impressive!

A fish course in the main dining room

There is an Always Available Menu that features a steak, a grilled chicken breast, and a vegetarian or pasta option.

The Always Available Steak

The lunch and dinner meals feature a white and red wine from the region you are sailing through, and they change daily (not every river cruise lines changes wines every day or offers included wine and beer).  There is also beer and other beverages.

In Europe, each AMA ship has the chef’s table specialty restaurant.  This program began in 2012.  This small dining venue (usually no more than 28 guests) features a kitchen where your meal is prepared right in front of you.

This shows the Chef’s Table area—in the background is the kitchen area. It is a wonderful experience.

This unique menu is paired with carefully selected fine wines.  It is truly a great experience.

The fish course in the Chef’s Table

AmaWaterways spends more than most other river cruise lines on the food and wines, and it shows, especially in this unique dining venue. We always go during our cruises and always arrange for the groups we led to dine together—it’s always a superb experience!

AmaWaterways is the first and only river cruise line member of the invitation-only La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, one of the world’s most prestigious culinary organizations.

Wellness

Most of our folks who travel with us believe that travel should provide them opportunities to improve their mental and physical health. Again, it is clear to us they are the best company for wellness.

Your mental health is improved as you get the chance to remove the stress of everyday living by being pampered, seeing and participating in new experiences and places, while in comfort. While there is a structured program, you can do as little or as much as you want and that alone is a stress reliever. Here are some great places onboard to relax:

Maybe you would like to relax in the Library with a book or a drink

Perhaps you might want to go for a dip in the pool

Perhaps a relaxing time with a bottle of wine on the top deck—even in winter we enjoy it. Mark Thomas posed for this picture for me.

The physical health aspect of your wellness on your cruise is a factor no other cruise line can match. AmaWaterways added a wellness host on every sailing by expanding the program they started in 2017.

We got an early look at the program on a winter cruise with the onboard wellness host, Selena on the AmaKristina. It was particularly good—as I have earned a master’s Degree in Physical Fitness, I think I have the credentials to properly evaluate the program.

Let me be clear—it is robust, fun and I was taken back about how many different activities were offered—it by far is the best fitness program on the Europe rivers by any company!

Among the features:  They offer stretching, Yoga, resistance bands, core exercises, bike tours and jogging tours.

All are professionally led—Marcello, from Portugal (in the yellow jacket below), was our onboard wellness host and he did an outstanding job on the AmaKristina in 2019!

The Alts ready for a ride with the Wellness Host Marcello

Selena, now the overall director of the program, has created a wonderful addition to Europe River cruising on every ship sailing in this region—well done!

AmaWaterways has designed special hikes that will take you a bit off the beaten path in some incredibly beautiful destinations.  Examples include making your way up to Dürnstein Fortress (splendid views of the Wachau Valley ) or walking the Philosopher’s Path in Heidelberg (an optional tour around the famous castle area).

Dürnstein Fortress provides splendid views of the Wachau Valley after your hike.

AmaWaterways carries a fleet of bicycles on board (they are free of charge), so you can see Europe’s enchanting scenery on riverside pathways while getting some exercise.  They dock close to many city centers and small towns, where you can ride along with the locals.

Bikes at the ready for guests

Options are to ride on your own, which has always been available since we started cruising in 2009, or join one of their exclusive guided tours, like a trek along the beautiful Danube River in Austria’s Wachau Valley.

Anne took this picture of the bike riders in the Wachau Valley on a bike ride while we sailed past them on our ship—this is one of the best rides in all of Europe.

This guided tour concept is new, and we have had clients who love these tours. These are now led by the on-board wellness host and have 2 guides.

We have had clients take a ride along the scenic shores of the Inn River in Passau and along the banks of the Mosel around Cochem.  Both reported, it was fun and a great experience.  We also rode into Wurzburg on our own and really enjoyed our short ride—the bikes are very good, and it was fun.

Exemplary Service

If you desire personal attention in a casual manner, AmaWaterways excels in this regard.

All the folks who work at AmaWaterways look to exceed your expectations—the culture of the company is consistent excellence, always improving and a genuine desire to make your vacation the best possible.  It is amazing how both clients and travel professionals talk about their experiences with AmaWaterways—words like friendly, proactive, professional, caring, and cool always seem to be used to describe their experiences.

Our Welcome reception on our Tulip Time Cruise with the Captain, the Hotel Manager and the cruise director Maddy

You know this company is on the right track when positive words, unsolicited, are used in interactions with others when talking about river cruise companies and AmaWaterways usually receives highly positive accolades.

Kris, our cruise manager, dressed up as Snow White, greeted us back from a tour on Halloween.

You are a guest that instantly becomes family—veteran cruisers often look for crew members who took care of them on past cruises.  Some are even Facebook friends.

Our favorite Bar staff—from left to right Peter, Miro and Tomas.

It is a genuinely warm, welcoming, and fully professional staff.  Every effort is to enhance your comfort, your experience, and the trip.  They care and it shows.

A few of the many awesome waiters we have sailed with—they are always over the top good!

Anne created this picture—we always have fun on our cruise and she added this special effects after taking this picture—pretty darn cool, in my opinion!

Trust me, you will fondly remember the staff.  If I was only allowed to pick one factor that is a difference factor among river cruise lines, it would be the staff at AmaWaterways—each performs their role superbly!

Quality and Value

To us, enrichment from your travels, means experiences that provide quality and value and are the most important considerations for choosing a river cruise company.  It is not about price alone, trying to get the cheapest trip—price does not determine quality, nor does it determine value.

In the previous 5 sections, we have tried to tell why we rate AmaWaterways #1.  They provide unique experiences; it is casual but elegant; it has excellent, award-winning cuisine; it has the best wellness program on the rivers of Europe and the service is exemplary—you really become part of the AmaWaterways family.  Some of the other lines we rate also have good programs but do not excel in all 5 of these areas.

A toast to you from both of us—let us help you experience this great cruise line and have the same type of experiences and fun as we have had!

To us, it is the quality and value that is just right—not too lean or too fancy; not the least costly cruise but also not the most expensive.  They really under promise and over deliver.

Our Final Thoughts

We hope you enjoyed this report.  It was fun writing about AmaWaterways—I probably tell their story 2-3 times a week over the phone to potential clients.

I should also mention that in these difficult times, AmaWaterways has managed to keep the standards as high as in the past and as advisors, they are the easiest company to work with for the benefit of our clients. We have full faith they will continue to deliver the same excellence as in the past and our guests who have sailed with them this year report all is going well and their vacations were outstanding.

We are travel experts, ocean and river cruise specialists, and Europe destination experts.  We have first-hand knowledge of almost anywhere you want to visit in Europe.  We know our products and the vendors who sell them to you.  We have designed special tours for dozens of clients, led several and will continue to find just the right vacation that will exceed your expectations.

Some Outstanding River Cruise Trips on AmaWaterways in 2022 and 2023

Hank Schrader, USMA '71, Europe Destination & Europe River Cruise Expert

Anne Schrader, Certified Travel Counselor & Certified Luxury Cruise Specialist

www.dreamdestinations.com

It’s been a while since I wrote an in-depth blog about AmaWaterways.

They always seem to be refining and upgrading their offerings, so I thought I’d report on this for you.  So, our challenge is to give you great information about 18 different AmaWaterways cruises from our perspective after taking 20 different AmaWaterways cruises.

The route maps are all courtesy of AmaWaterways and used by their permission.  As always, about 90%+ of the photos are ours and almost all taken by Anne, who is amazing capturing the essence of the places we have visited on these trips.

Yes, we have been on the whole route or parts of the route of all the cruises we are writing about in this blog!

So, let’s explore together and learn about AmaWaterways in 2022 and 2023.

I will start with a quick overview of the features of a cruise with AmaWaterways in Europe; tell you about a special promotion; and then dive into the routes in this long blog.

Overview

Before I start with specific cruises, I thought it would be a good thing to review what to expect on an AmaWaterways cruise trip with its onboard inclusions:

  • Fabulous food and wine in the main dining room & Chef’s Table Dining Experience—the awesome meals feature locally sourced fresh ingredients and recipes, and local wines.

  • Included “Sip & Sail” cocktail hour.

  • Elegantly Appointed Accommodations with never-ending scenic views on either their signature twin balconies, French balconies, or the fixed windows on the first deck

  • Complimentary Excursions in each port—including walking tours of historic areas, guided biking or hiking options (called active adventures) and cultural tours often featuring local great food and wine

  • Unlimited complimentary Wi-Fi access

  • An included Wellness program that is the best in Europe River Cruising—led by certified hosts who conduct fitness classes for you that range from Yoga to heart-pumping fitness cardio, and they help lead the bike and hiking tours.

  • A crew who always are exceptional—they provide the best service and safety for guests on Europe’s Rivers and your whole cruise is executed to perfection by a professional Cruise Manager to help you get the best experiences for your vacation.

Here is a blog I wrote about why you should sail on AmaWaterways a while back:

The Tulip Time cruise was our 4th cruise on AmaWaterways in 2013.  At first, AmaWaterways only sailed the Tulip Time route on the lower Rhine and canals in the Netherlands and Belgium in the spring.  It is a round trip loop that starts and ends in Amsterdam.

Do you love flowers?  Then visit the Netherlands in the springtime, when spectacular carpets of colorful tulips are in full bloom on a Tulip Time River Cruise.  Throw in lush green countryside adorned with picturesque windmills and add delicious cheeses and already the trip sounds awesome.  Also, this route can include the Belgium towns of Ghent, Arnhem, Antwerp, and our personal favorite Brugge.

Here is a blog I wrote about Tulip Time Cruises in 2019 on all major River Cruise Companies:

While once only sailed in the spring, AmaWaterways now sails this route during the summer and autumn and call it the Best of Holland & Belgium.

Enchanting Rhine and Captivating Rhine

We first did the Enchanting Rhine in 2016 and 2021 the Captivating Rhine in 2019The second route on the Rhine is usually from Amsterdam to Basel Switzerland on the Rhine, (or from Basel to Amsterdam on the next 7-day cruise), using both the lower Rhine and the upper Rhine (the upper Rhine is defined from Koblenz to its source in Lake Constance).

This is the second most popular cruise route in Europe.

This cruise begins with legendary canals and the colorful surroundings of Amsterdam, past the majestic Cologne Cathedral and on to the Black Forest region of Germany and the Alsace region of France.  The best stretch is the Rhine River Gorge with its’ 40 castles dotting the hillsides—unmatched anywhere in the world!

Here are 2 blogs I wrote about this route—the first is the Enchanting Rhine route; the second is Captivating Rhine Route during Christmas:

Rhine Castles & Swiss Alps

The difference in this cruise is the addition of Lake Como as a land extension and it only goes on the Captivating Rhine route but offers a trip to Lucerne at the Basel port.  Lucerne is an awesome stop and perhaps our favorite Swiss city.

Rhine & Moselle Fairytales; Rhine and Moselle Delights and the Rivers & Castles Routes

First, the Rivers & Castle route—it was our first sailing in 2009 with AmaWaterways. We were instantly hooked—so much vacation in a 7-day trip.  It sails from Trier, Germany to Nuremberg, Germany, or the reverse route (our sailing was the reverse route) on portions of the Rhine and the Main tributary and part of the Main Canal. It includes the best portions of the Rhine River dotted with picturesque castles from the Rhine River Gorge.

The Rhine & Moselle Fairytales and Rhine & Moselle Delights is a combination of both the Rhine and Moselle and is a longer cruise (11 nights). The Mosel also has some stunning castles nestled near vineyards and the steep riverbank slopes. This route includes visits to two great wine regions of Germany—the Mosel region famous for Riesling wines and the Franconia wine region is less well-known producer of dry white wines made from Sylvaner grapes.

Some consider the Mosel the most beautiful river in Europe—this river has been one of my personal favorites since 1989 on my first visit.

Danube Cruises

Legendary Danube and Blue Danube Discovery

The Legendary Danube was our second cruise in 2011 and we have taken the Blue Danube Discovery route in 2012 and 2018.  The Upper Danube is the other great route on Europe rivers (it is the single most popular river cruise route in all Europe—it has about 30% of all river cruise passengers that take a Europe River cruise every year)—and typically goes from Nuremberg or Vilshofen to Budapest.

You will get to visit 4 countries, 2 or 3 capital cities (Vienna, usually Bratislava and Budapest), castles, Abbeys, wine-sloped terraces, and even quaint villages--it is a great voyage.

This route sometimes uses the Main-Danube Canal if it goes all the way Nuremberg (106 miles long with 16 locks)—a marvel of engineering and completion of a dream started by Charlemagne in 793 that was finally completed in 1992—about 1200 years later.

Magna on the Danube

The AmaMagna sails the whole Danube on the Vilshofen to Budapest route and the Black Sea Voyage route.  It can be a seven-night cruise, or a fourteen-night Grand Danube cruise described below.

The difference here is the best river ship in all of Europe—the Double Wide AmaMagna.  We have never sailed her but looking forward to it! Since we have not yet sailed on the AmaMagna, the photos of this wonderful ship are courtesy of AmaWaterways.

Grand Danube Cruise

The Grand Danube is a combination of the upper Danube Route (described in the Legendary and Blue Danube routes) and the Black Sea Voyage on the lower Danube we did in 2014.

The lower Danube is the gateway to Eastern Europe.  This segment begins in Budapest and ends near the Black Sea.

It starts with the rolling hills and vine-clad slopes of the Pecs in Hungary; then moves to the boundary waters that separate Serbia and Croatia; then traverses the narrow gorges of the Iron Gates, a stunning passage that divides the Balkan and Carpathian Mountains and either ends in Bucharest, Romania or at the Black Sea.

Here are 2 blogs I wrote about sailing on the Danube:

French Cruises

Colors of Provence

We have done this route three times —in 2013, 2014 and 2016, leading a groupThis Rhône and Saône cruise goes from Lyon to Arles or Avignon.

Starting in Lyon, the gastronomical capital of France, the cruise goes through France's legendary wine growing regions of Beaujolais and Cote du Rhône, and allows you observe medieval villages in the Provence region of France.

Then on to the Papal town of Avignon and finish in Arles, where Vincent Van Gogh spent much of his time.  The cruise then changes direction from Arles to Lyon for the next 7-day cruise.   You will sample great wines, visit Roman ruins, and learn about the cuisine of Provence, among stunning scenery—fields of purple lavender, yellow sunflowers, and vineyards.

Here is a blog I wrote about the Colors of Provence River Cruise on AmaWaterways:

Essence of Burgundy & Provence

We are leading a group on this cruise in October 2022—come join us!  There is more emphasis here on the Saône River.

A Taste of Bordeaux

In 2017, we sailed on the Taste of Bordeaux route. This cruise is in the Bordeaux region of France on the Garonne, Dordogne, and Gironde Rivers.  It is a round trip cruise out of Bordeaux and features wine tastings, impressive chateaux’s, and abundant vineyards along the Garonne and its tributaries.

There are over 8,500 wine producing estates in this region—it is often considered the wine capital of the world. Usual port cities of Cadillac, Pauillac, Bourg and Libourne are included in most sailings of this region.  This is an important wine region of France, and you will experience tastings of some of the most distinguished wines in the world including Sauternes, Medoc, and Bordeaux wines (my personal favorites).

If you like wine, cognac, oysters, truffles, chateaux, and the grand buildings of Bordeaux, this is the cruise for you.

Here is a blog I wrote about this cruise:

Special Cruises

Seven Rivers Journeys

This unique journey requires a completely different blog and we have sailed most of this route.  It sails through 14 different countries on 7 different portions of Europe’s best rivers.

Secrets of Egypt & the Nile

Queen Nefertari’s Tomb. in December 2021. Photo Anne Schrader

In December 2021, we sailed this new addition to the AmaWaterways offerings for a 10-day land and cruise package that will fascinate you.  The adventure starts in Cairo, staying at the 5-star Four Seasons Hotel with views of the Nile, the world’s longest river.

In Cairo, highlights of the 3-day stay were visits to 3 Pyramids of Giza (the only remain intact structures of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World) and the Sphinx; touring the Egyptian Museum; a visit to Memphis (the old capital of Ancient Egypt); and the burial grounds of the Saqqara, with the wonderful step pyramid of Djoser.

Next, aboard the AmaDahlia, a newly designed Nile River cruise ship, we got to sail the Nile for 7 days.  Among the highlights were visits to Hall of Karnak (my personal favorite due its size and grandeur), the beguiling Temple of Luxor, the burial tombs of Valley of the Kings (we saw 3 tombs including King Tut’s tomb) and in the Valley of the Queens, where we had exclusive access to the Tomb of Queen Nefertari (a stunning tomb that was Anne’s favorite).

We took optional tour to Abu Simbel, and it was amazing.  I also liked the Temple of Kom Ombo (a temple dedicated to 2 gods—the Falcon god and the Crocodile god), and the Temple of Edfu (dedicated to the Falcon god).

This tour is not for everyone but an amazing experience and a fascinating look into Ancient Egypt. Here are 3 great blogs about this trip:

19 Years Old--Happy Birthday AmaWaterways!

19 Years Old—Happy Birthday AmaWaterways!

Hank Schrader, USMA '71, Europe Destination & Europe River Cruise Expert

www.dreamdestinations.com

On 30 June 2002, Rudi and Kristin sat at their kitchen table and started a river cruise company that was then called Amadeus.

19 years later, they have become the best River Cruise Company for most of our clients.  As Kristin told me once just before my first guest appearance on AmaWaterways webinar for other travel agents, her vision and dream was to have 2 river cruise ships in Europe.

Little did she know how far the company would come 19 years later.

The company has grown into a company we trust to deliver a vacation that will exceed your expectations.  As Kristin always says, their vision was to create a company that they would be proud to sail on.  They certainly have achieved this!

In many ways, their growth parallels our growth as European River Cruise Experts—we learned about European river cruising by taking our first cruise on AmaWaterways in the summer of 2009 and realized this was a great vacation that would become the most important trip we offer to clients and our core product.

We have documented many of these achievements in older blogs—if you want more in-depth information, please visit our river cruise blog archives on our website https://www.dreamdestinations.com/europe-river-cruise-blog-archives

So, let’s explore together and learn about AmaWaterways’ history and river cruise firsts—you won’t be disappointed!  There is so much to cover, I won’t be able to include it all but you will be amazed how far this great company has come in 19 years.

Company Founding and Overview

Founded in 2002 by river cruise pioneers Rudi Schreiner, Kristin Karst and Jimmy Murphy, AmaWaterways sails on Europe’s Danube, Douro, Main, Moselle, Rhine, Rhône, Garonne and Seine rivers.  It has expanded into Africa and Asia.

Hank and Rudi

The line now sails to more than 24 countries in Europe, Africa and Asia, including Austria, Belgium, Botswana, Bulgaria, Cambodia, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Kenya, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, South Africa, Spain, Switzerland, Tanzania, Turkey, Vietnam and Zimbabwe.

Some Important Year By Year Changes

2006

The company launched its first originally designed and built ship, the AmaDagio (we sailed on her in 2013).

The AmaDagio Ship Bell

The AmaDagio

The AmaDagio

Along with a great ship designed by Rudi, there were two firsts in the river cruise industry—they were the first to carry bicycles on board and to have internet, free of charge, on board.

AmaDagio Bikes

AmaDagio Bikes

I heard a funny story about the internet from some older cruise managers about the internet.  When other cruise lines companies learned about the internet being used on AmaWaterways, the would try to dock next to AmaWaterways ships to try and use the free Wi-Fi since their ships did not have this feature.

For me, this was the start of the exceptional trend setting of the AmaWaterways’ product—almost every other river cruise line now offers what AmaWaterways started in 2006 and later years.  Here is what I wrote in 2016 on a blog about their bike program:

Explore on Two Wheels.  AmaWaterways carries a fleet of bicycles on board (they are free of charge), so you can see Europe’s enchanting scenery on riverside pathways while getting some exercise.  They dock close to many city centers and small towns, where you can ride along the locals. Options are to ride on your own, which has always been available since we started cruising in 2009, or join one of our exclusive guided tours, like a trek along the beautiful Danube River in Austria’s Wachau Valley.

Cycling group from our 2018 Danube cruise waving to us

This guided tour concept is new and we have had clients who love these tours (an update, these are now led by the on board wellness host and have 2 guides).

We have had clients take a ride along the scenic shores of the Inn River in Passau and along the banks of the Mosel around Cochem.  Both reported, it was fun and a great experience.  We also rode into Wurzburg on our own and really enjoyed our short ride—the bikes are very good and it was fun.

2009

AmaWaterways builds the Zambezi Queen and begins sailing in Africa on the Chobe River.  Holding only 28 passengers, this is an experience of a lifetime.  We sent 4 clients on this cruise in 2016.

2010-2012

AmaWaterways builds the AmaVerde and the AmaBella, with ship design innovations and features that changes the river cruise industry.  Among the changes:

The Chef’s Table.  In Europe, each AMA ship has the chef’s table specialty restaurant.  This program began in 2012.  This small dining venue (usually no more than 28 guests) features a kitchen where your meal is prepared right in front of you.  This unique menu is paired with carefully selected fine wines.  It is truly a great experience.

The Chef is ready to make our meal

AmaWaterways spends more than most other river cruise lines on the food and wines and it shows, especially in this unique dining venue.  We always go during our cruises and always arrange for the groups we led to dine together—it’s always a superb experience!

AmaWaterways is the first river cruise line member of the invitation-only La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, one of the world’s most prestigious culinary organizations.

Ship Design Improvements.  The newer designed long ships (135 meters) have 4 great new features.

First, the twin balconies have been added to some cabins—one is a French balcony with a sliding glass door and the other is an outside balcony to sit and watch the river glide by.

Outside of a twin balcony

The second feature is an enhanced pool topside, that includes a swim up bar.  It is a nice upgrade from the hot tub on earlier riverboats.

The third is two separated larger tables that can seat 10 in the front of the main dining room.  These also serve as a wine storage area, so it’s like dining in a wine cellar.

The last design feature is the lounge library area-- a reading room complete with an electronic fireplace.

2015

In 2015, AmaWaterways expands into SE Asia, sailing on the Mekong on the AmaDara

2017

AmaWaterways added a wellness host on every sailing by expanding the program they started in 2017.

We got an early look at the program in the winter with the onboard wellness host, Selena on the AmaKristina. It was very good—as I have earned a master’s Degree in Physical Fitness, I think I have the credentials to properly evaluate the program.

Let me be clear—it is robust, fun and I was taken back about how many different activities were offered—it by far is the best fitness program on the Europe rivers by any company!

Among the features:  They offer stretching, Yoga, resistance bands, core exercises, bike tours and jogging tours. All are professionally led—Marcello, from Portugal, was our onboard wellness host and he did an outstanding job on the AmaKristina in 2019!

IMG_1525.JPG

Selena, now the overall director of the program, has created a wonderful addition to Europe river cruising—well done!  Here is a sample of another great off board program that I had previously written about:

Go for a Hike.  The beauty of Europe doesn’t just lie in its architecture and landmarks – there are also great views to see and unique experiences when you venture out into nature.

AmaWaterways has designed special hikes that will take you a bit off the beaten path in some very beautiful destinations.  Examples include making your way up to Dürnstein Fortress (great views of the Wachau Velley), or walking the Philosopher’s Path in Heidelberg (an optional tour around the famous castle area).

You can see this would be a great hike for views of the Wachau Valley

You can see this would be a great hike for views of the Wachau Valley

2018-19

AmaWaterways expands its partnership with Adventures by Disney, and Backroads.  The Adventures with Disney is focused on kid’s activities.  Backroads is a premier cycling company.

2009-2021

It is not just the improvements of the sailing vessels, without a doubt, the most important improvement is the expanded tour options.  Here is a brief summary of the key changes we have seen:

Limited Edition Tours.

Picture6.jpg
Picture16.png

Anne also helped make a traditional soup in Bratislava—it was a fun experience.

Picture15.png

We have had clients participate in the Vienna tour and they really liked it (one great benefit for us—we discovered a great schnitzel restaurant which we managed to eat at as a result of their tour—it was the largest schnitzel I’ve ever seen, and just melted in our mouths—a really neat experience!).

Limited Edition Tours are also a great option for a cruiser who is sailing on the same route a second or third time—it provides a new experience that enhances your trip.

Les Halles Food Tour

Les Halles Food Tour

Special Wine Themed Cruises

In 2013, we went on our first wine themed cruises.  Since then, we have been on 3.  There is now over 60 wine themed cruises a year.  I have also written 2 special blogs about wine cruises on AmaWaterways (3 June 2021 and 24 September 2020)

2019

The double wide AmaMagna debuts and begins cruising on the Danube.  It is the best river cruise ship in Europe. We have several clients sailing on her in 2021.

2021

AmaWaterways resumes sailing starting on 3 July 2021.  In September, they will begin sailing on the Nile with the new AmaDahlia.  We plan to experience this new 10 day route in December of 2021.

2022

AmaWaterways s partners with Ancestry—I covered this in last week’s blog (24 June 2021).

2023

AmaWaterways offers a new 7 rivers journey, 46 night cruising experience.  I wrote about this in a blog on 17 May 2021.

My Final Thoughts

What a great story—just another reason we love the Old World of Europe so much!  We hope you enjoyed this trip down memory lane as much as we enjoyed sharing them with you.  I think it is very easy to see why we think AmaWaterways is the best river cruise company.

2 Awesome 14 Day Cruises on AmaWaterways

2 Awesome 14 Day Cruises on AmaWaterways

Hank Schrader, USMA '71, Europe Destination & Europe River Cruise Expert

www.dreamdestinations.com

As we all wait anxiously for the return of river cruise travel to Europe in 2021, one of the biggest trends at AmaWaterways is how easy it is to combine back-to-back cruises with their usual 7 day routes.

We have been doing this with clients since 2015, but it has evolved into a much better process with a lot more options than we used to have 6 years ago.

Just to show you how vast the options are, we actually have a client doing an AmaWaterways Nile cruise (new for 2021) and then off to Christmas Markets cruise on the AmaMagna on the Danube—talk about temperature extremes!

This blog will focus on the Danube and French cruises.  We have sailed on all except the Paris & Normandy route, since as many of our readers know, we have led 2 anniversary tours focusing on D Day beaches in Normandy.  Also, we have helped several clients sail on these 14 day routes, so rest assured we will know how to help you get the best trip on these combination routes.

Any combination of two 7 day cruises will result in a 10% discount for you on the second cruise—another sound reason to consider this option.

There is a lot to cover here, so we’ll try and make it easy by providing route maps and Anne’s wonderful pictures.  You can also visit our website for more in-depth info on our river cruise pages at www.dreamdestinations.com –it is very comprehensive and we are very proud of the great content.

So, let’s explore together and learn about these 2 routes—there are so many options I can’t cover them all, so I will highlight these two we consider among your best options—you won’t be disappointed, I promise!

The Grand Danube

This is one great look at the heart of Europe.  It starts in Germany and winds up on the Romanian/Bulgarian portion of the Danube close to Bucharest.

It is really a combination of 2 routes—the Upper Danube and the Lower Danube.  The Danube is 1,170 miles, making it the second longest river in Europe after the Volga River in Russia.

Along with a great route, you will remain in the same stateroom for the voyage—it just doesn’t get easier than this to see 8 countries in Europe in a meaningful way—you will spend your time seeing and doing, not packing and unpacking.

This route is served by 3 AmaWaterways ships—the double wide AmaMagna, the AmaBella and the AmaVerde.  The sailing season is scheduled to go from 28 March to 21 November in 2021 but we think sailing will resume sometime this summer due to the pandemic.

The Upper Danube is the most popular river cruise route in Europe --typically from Vishofen to Budapest.

Slide10.JPG

You will get to visit 4 countries, 3 capital cities (Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest), castles, Abbeys, wine-sloped terraces and even quaint villages-it is a great voyage.

It is perhaps the best overall look at Europe by providing you a fascinating look at key parts of Western Europe and Eastern Europe.

Combining Cruises in France

Combining French river cruises is an easy option but requires a change of ship.  The great news is you get to ride the TGV—the fast Europe rail which is our favorite way to travel after river cruising—to the next ship.

If you love France and want to explore it, sailing on 2 of these routes is the solution for a vacation you will never forget.

The easiest combination is to combine the Seine cruise with either a Rhone cruise or a Bordeaux cruise.

However, you could combine a Bordeaux cruise with a Rhone cruise which would have special appeal to wine lovers as this would represent the two most important wine growing regions except for the Champagne region near Reims (sorry Anne to skip her favorite beverage but just add it on at the end of the cruise).

There are three great rivers that AmaWaterways cruises in France.  They are the Seine, the Rhone and the Garonne River Basin around Bordeaux.

The Seine-route which is best for a combination 14 day cruise is the 7 day round trip cruise into Normandy, starting and ending in Paris.  The route name is Paris & Normandy and you will be sailing on the AmaLyra.

The cruise highlights are Monet's village of Honfleur, Rouen, the historic capital of Normandy, as well as a chance to visit the medieval towns along this scenic route and a full day visit the D-Day Normandy beaches.

The new for 2021 route, Essence of Burgundy & Provence starts in Chalon-sur Saone and finishes in Arles, where Vincent Van Gough spent much of his time.  You will get to visit Beaune, Tournus, Macon, Lyon, Vienne (one of our personal favorites), Avignon and Arles.

What a great adventure—a chance to see a lot of Europe in luxury on a trip of a lifetime!

AmaWaterways Wins 5 Readers Choice Awards from TravelAge West Magazine

AmaWaterways Wins 5 Readers Choice WAVE Awards from TravelAge West Magazine

By Hank Schrader, USMA ’71, Europe Destination & Europe River Cruise Expert

www.dreamdestinations.com

I guess it is no surprise to me that AmaWaterways is in the winner’s circle again—we consider them the best river cruise company among a lot of good choices for European river cruises.

If you have read our 2020-2021 company comparisons, there are many factors that make AmaWaterways a special company and they deserve the recognition from these awards.

This is the real deal folks—there are many good options and 5 worthy contenders in each category, yet AmaWaterways is consistently voted the best by travel agents during the Wave (Western Agents’ Votes of Excellence) Awards.

We know a lot about how hard these awards are to win—we won a Trendsetters Runner-Up Wave Award for Best Targeted Marketing Idea in 2018.

Anne & Hank.jpg

Here are the categories they won, based on voting by travel agents—the folks who are the most knowledgeable about the best river cruise companies:

River Cruise Line with the Highest Client Satisfaction

Best New Ship (River Cruise) AmaMagna

Best Onboard Dining (River Cruise)

Best River Cruise Line for Families

River Cruise Line Providing the Best Travel Advisor Support

Ready?—let’s go together and learn all about the awards.

River Cruise Line with the Highest Client Satisfaction

We all know how much satisfied customers means to any business and AmaWaterways excels consistently with guests.

Basically, this means that the products and services of AmaWaterways meets or exceeds customer expectation.

Our clients often feel the same way—it is one reason so many of our river cruise clients chose to sail with AmaWaterways.

Best New Ship (River Cruise)—the AmaMagna

There is only one true Giant on the Danube—the AmaMagna, the ultimate European river cruise ship.  She sails the upper and lower Danube River routes.

AmaMagna. Image from AmaWaterways

AmaMagna. Image from AmaWaterways

Built in 2019, the magnificent AmaMagna has 96 staterooms and carries 196 passengers.  She is a long ship (443 ft long or 110 meter) but double wide at 72 ft—most other river cruise ships are only 38 ft wide.  With the current COVID-19 pandemic, she will not carry a full 196 passengers.

It is the largest river cruise ship in Europe.

Here is a quick summary of the dining options:

There are 4 dining options—the main dining room, Jimmy’s Wine Bar, the Al Fresco dining area and the chef’s table.

Al Fresco Dining Area. Photo from AmaWaterways

Al Fresco Dining Area. Photo from AmaWaterways

•Regionally inspired cuisine made with locally sourced ingredients

•The Chef’s Table specialty restaurant

•Welcome Cocktail, Welcome Dinner, Captain's Cocktail and Gala Dinner

•La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs exclusive dining experience

•Unlimited fine wine, beer and soft drinks with lunch and dinner

•Unlimited sparkling wine and fresh juice with breakfast

•Sip & Sail Cocktail Hour with complimentary wine, beer, spirits and soft drinks

•Tapas, sandwiches, snacks and refreshments served daily in the Main Lounge

There is a lot of personal space, as the suites range from 355 sq ft to 710 sq ft, most featuring full balconies.

Other onboard features include an upper and lower lounges (with intimate pockets to relax unhindered); a water sports platform (it has a Sundowner vessel for an excursion at no extra charge); a Zen wellness studio with fitness center offering exercise classes led by a professional wellness host, 2 massage rooms plus manicure and pedicure services; and an expansive sun deck with a large heated pool and a pop-up sky bar.

Trust me—there is nothing like this sailing on any European Rivers by any other river cruise company.

Best Onboard Dining (River Cruise)

After sailing on AmaWaterways 17 times, we agree wholeheartedly with this award.  There is no extra charge for all these options, so this makes it even a better deal.

The main dining room serves most of the meals you will eat on board this river ship.

Here is a sample lunch menu (quite an impressive selection, in my opinion):

IMG_1321.JPG

Every evening on the dinner menu (a 4 course affair of an appetizer, a soup or salad course, a main course and dessert), there are 3 Entrée’s choices—usually a meat dish, a fish dish and a vegetarian option.—all are excellent! Here are some of our meals—they were awesome!

IMG_7172.JPG

Picture5.png

There is an Always Available Menu that features a steak, a grilled chicken breast, and a vegetarian or pasta option.

The lunch and dinner meals feature a white and red wine from the region you are sailing thru and they change daily (not every river cruise lines changes wines every day or offers included wine and beer).  There is also beer and other beverages.

One item of note—portions are slightly smaller in recent sailings and for the baby boomers of our generation, this is a smart move.  You can always have more food, but even for big eaters like me, the portions were properly sized.

I do have to point out that on the Always Available Menu, I usually get the steak once during the cruise.  It always is large, and very tasty.  Here is a photo—looks very good, doesn’t it!

IMG_1408.JPG

The Chef’s Table.  In Europe, each AmaWaterways ship has the chef’s table specialty restaurant.  This small dining venue (usually no more than 28 guests) features a kitchen where your meal is prepared right in front of you.  This unique menu is paired with carefully selected fine wines.  It is truly a great experience.  At least each year the menu changes, so we will look forward to our next sailing to see what great new features will be added to this fun dining experience. Here are some pictures from our past Chef’s Table experiences:

IMG_1383.JPG
Picture9.png

AMA spends more than most other river cruise lines on the food and wines and it shows, especially in this unique dining venue.  We always go during our cruises and always arrange for the groups we led to dine together—it’s always a superb experience!

But that is not the only culinary achievement—they are the only river cruise line inducted into the La Confrérie de la Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, a prestigious international gastronomic society dedicated to fine cuisine.

The entire European fleet and President Rudi Schreiner were honored.  According to the AmaWaterways website, the society was

“Founded in Paris in 1950 to honor the royal Guild of Goose Roasters (whose origins date back to the 13th century), it is the oldest and largest food and wine society in the world. Membership to La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs is by invitation only and is extended to those possessing world-class culinary acumen.”

If you want good food and wine on a river cruise, go on AmaWaterways—it seems a lot of other travel advisors share our opinion!  Pretty easy to see why the won the Best Onboard Dining Wave Award for River Cruising in 2020.

Best River Cruise Line for Families

We have seen first-hand how well AmaWaterways helps families have superior vacations.

Here is just a partial list:

Flexibility—multiple tour and activity options help make all ages enjoy the trip-it could be active with the bikes or hiking, seeing and touring castles, a wine tasting for adults, seeing sights you have only read about in in a safe, organized tour.  Multi-generational family members do their own thing yet get to share the overall experience.

Wellness--Almost all raters of Europe river cruising companies, cite AmaWaterways for their active and wellness program.  All European riverships have a wellness host—leading exercise classes, bike tours and hikes—we have seen this program in action and it is excellent.

Adjoining accommodations—since 2016 several staterooms have these adjoining staterooms—sure makes easy to travel with the family.

Hassle free—unpack once for 7 days and spend your time having fun—meals, tours are included.

Here are 4 great ideas from AmaWaterways for family friendly cruises (these 4 slides are from AmaWaterways and we were given permission to include them in this blog):

In all our dealings with AmaWaterways, even if we only sold one or two river cruises at first, we were and continue to be treated like we are the most important partner in whole world.  Believe me, not all vendors treat us this way.

Wine Cruises on AmaWaterways

Wine Cruises on AmaWaterways

By Hank Schrader, USMA ’71, Europe Destination & Europe River Cruise Expert

www.dreamdestinations.com

By far, AmaWaterways has the most special wine cruises as compared to the other 7 river cruise lines that primarily market to North America river cruisers—as you may know we study all 8 lines (AmaWaterways, Avalon, Crystal, Emerald, Scenic, Tauck, Uniworld and Viking).

AmaWaterways has 60+sailings a year that have a special wine theme and the events are included in the cruise fare—that’s right, there is no additional cost to be on a wine themed cruise.

So, today, I’d like to tell you about wine cruises on AmaWaterways.  I will tell you about the 4 European areas that have wine cruises included in the fare and explain what it is like to be on a wine cruise, as we have been on 4 with AmaWaterways.

I will finish up, by telling you about a special idea we have about a pre/post tour with a wine cruise and a tour of some key WW I and WW II sites in 2022, so please read to the end of this blog to learn more.

A Quick Overview of Wine Cruises on AmaWaterways

The wine themed cruises are usually led by a Wine Host from a winery in the United States.  The host will conduct some tastings of their wines, discuss wine and host a wine dinner on the ship paired with their wines.

We have been on two hosted by US winemakers and two cruises hosted by drink experts—one was a regional expert from France and the other was a beer cruise with a beer expert from the US .  The Ledson wine cruise (on the Rhône) and the Bordeaux cruise were special—we would go again on both.

The other bonus about these special wine cruises is that they are often in Spring or Fall, times when the cruises cost a little less than the most popular summer season.

When you consider that wine and food on AmaWaterways is already over the top—the fare is regionally –inspired cuisine, using fresh food sources and always paired with 2 daily changing wines—a wine cruise just enhances the chances to learn and enjoy wine even more!

France Wine Regions

The Bordeaux region and the Rhône region are the 2 main French wine regions that you can experience on an AmaWaterways cruise in France.  On a Rhine river cruise route, there is often a bonus region of Alsace white wines.

Bordeaux region of France on the Garonne, Dordogne and Gironde Rivers is about wine more than other sights on their “A Taste of Bordeaux” cruise.  It is a round trip cruise out of Bordeaux and features wine tastings, chateaux’s and abundant vineyards along the Garonne and its tributaries.

There are over 8,500 wine producing estates in this region—it is often considered the wine capital of the world.  Usual port cities of Cadillac, Pauillac, Bourg and Libourne are included in most sailings of this region.

This is an important wine region of France and you will experience tastings of some of the most distinguished wines including Sauternes, Medoc and Bordeaux wines (my personal favorites).

Here is what wine expert Mark Thomas said about his favorite wines on this cruise (we traveled together on this route in 2017):

“Some of my very favorite red wine varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and various blended wines with these varietals in varying percentages.  For white varietals, again some of my favorites: Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon with which some produce world-famous Sauternes.”

Rhône River

Imagine sailing on the Rhône River through the legendary wine growing regions of Provence, getting the chance to sample Beaujolais and Côtes du Rhône!

Here is what my travel chum and wine expert Mark Thomas had to say about the wines on this cruise:

“In Provence, Rose’s dominate.  These delicious bold, crisp, fruity wines pair great with the local seafood dishes (Bouillabaisse, Fish soup, etc.).  The red grapes that dominate the region include Mourvèdre and Grenache while the primary white grapes include Bourboulenc, Grenache Blanc, and Clairette, usually blended together in some form or another.

As you head up the Rhône River from Arles toward Lyon, you first encounter the Southern Rhône region where the red grape varietal Grenache dominates.  Often primarily blended with Syrah, and Mourvèdre, these wines are rich, earthy, gamey, and full-bodied especially in the area of Châteauneuf-Du-Pape.  Other red blending grape varietals include Carignan, Cinsaut, and Counoise.  The delicious white varietals of the Southern Rhône are the same as in Provence.

Moving into the Northern Rhône, you’ll find Syrah is king among the red varietals while Viognier in the appellation of Condrieu, along with gorgeous blends of Marsanne and Roussanne in the appellations of Hermitage and St. Joseph dominate the white varietals.”

Just so you know, we had never had a Viognier before going on this route and now it is one of our favorites—if you want to experience, new great wines, AmaWaterways is a great place to start!

Wow!—does it help to have your own personal sommelier to help you learn about wines?—you bet it does!

Alsace’s Wines

On an AmaWaterways cruise on the Rhine River from Amsterdam to Basel or reverse, there is a good chance to sample some wines from Alsace.

The key grapes grown in the region of Alsace are Riesling, Muscat, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir.  According to wine experts, although these grapes are also grown in Germany, the Alsace wines have more flavor and are much drier than those produced across on the eastern side of the Rhine River in Germany.  These robust white wines are also named for the grapes—a common practice in Germany but much less common in France.

Since 1983, the official gran cru appellation status has been awarded to about 50 terroirs.  Most of these gran cru appellation wines are dry whites.

Trust me, they are excellent!

3 of Germany’s 13 Wine regions—the Rheingau, Franconia and Moselle Regions

Wine Regions of Germany. Map from AmaWaterways

The Rheingau wine region produces elegant Riesling wines—about 78% of the total wine production along this stretch of the Rhine River are Rieslings.  About 12% of the other grapes grown in this area are Pinot Noir (or Spätburgunder, as the Germans call it).

The Vineyards around the town of Rüdesheim

The Vineyards around the town of Rüdesheim

The town of Rüdesheim is a great place to sample some of these great wines.  There are often 2 wine tasting tours here and both are fun and serve great wine.  As an extra bonus, there is coffee drink I first had while in the military—Rüdesheimer coffee (coffee, flamed Asbach brandy and topped with whipped cream).  If you have never had it, you are missing one of the great coffee drinks in the world!

The Franconia wine region is less well known producer of dry white wines made from Silvaner grapes.  The official name is Grüner Silvaner.  A lot of this wine is grown around Würzburg.

One unique feature of this wine is its special bottle—it is in a bottle called a Bocksbeutel (in German)—a distinctive green oval shaped bottle.

One feature of wine cruises on the Main River is a special wine tasting in Würzburg’s baroque Residenz Palace.  Wine in a palace—how cool is that!

The Moselle region is famous for Riesling wines. Many writers claim this is the best of Germany’s wine regions, as the Rieslings (about 60% of the grapes planted here) have an exceptional balance between sweetness and acidity.

Vineyards near Bernkastel on the Moselle

On the Moselle, my favorite wine port is Zell.  It is famous for its white wine Zellerschwartzkatz (Zell’s black cat)—I also first had this while in the military on various visits to Germany.  The really great draw of this village is the story of Zell’s Black Cat Wine.

According to legend, a large quantity of local wine was being stored in barrels in a regional cellar.  When people approached, a black cat jumped on the barrel from Zell and started hissing to protect its contents.  Seeing the hissing, caused the wine merchants to believe the wine from Zell was special and better quality than the other wines stored in the wine cellar building.  Today the black cat is the symbol of this town.

AmaWaterways has an exclusive wine festival celebration in Zell.  The local children, dressed up like black cats, provide a performance that everyone who has visited Zell on AmaWaterways will remember.  You don’t even have to be on a special wine cruise to get this unique experience!

Just to let you know, the legend is true—the wine is great!

Portugal’s Douro Valley

The Douro Wine Regions Map

The Douro Wine Regions Map

This is a cruise for wine lovers, especially aficionados of the desert wine port (a fortified wine with alcohol added), also a cruise for those who want to sample and learn more about Portuguese cuisine, and for adventures who love new destinations.

While port is far and away the most import wine in the region, there is increasing recognition of whites and reds produced in this great wine growing region and I was surprised to learn about 50% of the total wine production is wines other than port.

The steep, dry slopes of the Douro and soil characteristics (terroir) produce remarkable wines.

Some of the Douro’s wine vineyards. Photo from our clients the Howards.

Some of the Douro’s wine vineyards. Photo from our clients the Howards.

Perhaps the most surprising fact is how many different ports, from sweet to really dry, are produced here.  One of our clients brought us a bottle of 30 year aged, dry, Tawny port—it didn’t last long in the Schrader household.

The Danube

One of the great reasons to go to Europe, especially on an AmaWaterways river cruise, is learning about a wine that would soon become one of our favorites.

Perhaps, the best wine region on a Danube cruise is in the Wachau Valley.  It produces 2 great wines-- Wachau Grüner Veltliner and Riesling wines.  I had never tasted Grüner Veltliner before this trip, but does it ever pair well with Wiener schnitzel, one of my all-time favorite entrees!

Jeff and Hank share a glass of wine on our 2018 Danube cruise

Now we look for this wonderful white wine to enjoy at home and in restaurants.

In researching this blog, I read one source that said Rieslings from the Wachau have more in common with Alsace Rieslings than the Moselle Rieslings—but for me they all are great!

I also learned that Moselle Rieslings wines are bottled in green glass, so they can be distinguished from Rhine Rieslings which are bottled in brown glass.

Since we have experienced Rieslings from all three wine areas while on 3 different AmaWaterways cruises, my advice—make your own comparison trips with our help!  You can’t go wrong here—they are all good and I’m sure you will agree if you try our taste test challenge and book all 3 with us!

Our 2022 Cruise Idea

We are still working on an idea that might really appeal for many of you readers of this blog.  We are planning 2 AmaWaterways River Cruises with a pre/post cruise to the other great wine region of France—the Champagne region of Reims.  It won’t just be wine tasting, it will include a trip to the WW II sites of the Ardennes (Battle of the Bulge) and the WW I historic sites around Reims (there is a 40 mile circuit that has some of the best sights in France).

We are still working on the details, so keep reading the blog for the latest updates.

We hope to repeat our great success leading military themed trips as we were able to achieve on our 70th and 75th Anniversary trips to D Day.

The bonus is we plan to invite Mark Thomas as our Wine Host on one of the cruises.

If you want to be on our list to be notified about this or other specials we might have please email me at hschrader@dreamdestinations.com.

My Final Thoughts

It’s time to raise a glass or two—CHEERS, SALUD, PROST!

Does it get any better than this?—all the fabulous features of a river cruise and a special wine themed cruise included for free!

So now is the time to take action when travel restrictions are lifted.  We will be ready to help!

When you are spending your hard-earned money for a vacation, you want an advisor who can match you with the right trip.  You want someone who will understand your expectations and fuel your anticipation (or excitement) to get you the best possible trip experience.  And, you want someone who can help you with the decision making process.  We think we have all these qualities.

Whatever your Dream Destinations are, we are here to help you get the best possible vacation based on what is important to you!  We will provide you high quality, expertly planned travel.  Please give me a call 713-397-0188 (Hank) or email me at hschrader@dreamdestinations.com.  We want to help you:  Savor life…make memories…Visit Dream Destinations!  Your journey begins here!

AmaWaterways—High Performance during Tough Times

By Hank Schrader, USMA ’71, Europe Destination & Europe River Cruise Expert

www.dreamdestinations.com

I think I know a thing or two about High Performing Organizations.  I have been part of at least 3 in my working career.

During my military career, I was the S3 (Operations Officer) of 2-23 Infantry, the Army’s first Light Infantry Battalion (about 560 soldiers).  It was an amazing group, focused on being the best possible unit.  Later in life, I was the defensive coordinator of the Bellevue Wolverines, who won the 2001 Washington State Football Championship with a record of 13-0.

In the river cruise world, I have learned that, in my humble opinion, AmaWaterways is just such an amazing organization, it ranks right up there also with my first 2 cited organizations.  We have partnered with them to benefit our clients.

It is no wonder why they are the company we recommend first, but now, more than ever, I think they are handling these tough times better than other river cruise companies.

So, this week, I’d like to write about why AmaWaterways is a high performer in tough times.  I first plan to tell about how they are protecting our clients in these difficult times and then explain why they are high performing.

Decisive Leadership in Troubled Times from Us & AmaWaterways

Since our primary business is Europe river cruises, and 95% or more of our annual river cruise business is with AmaWaterways, how they treat our clients is paramount to us.

From our view, not only do they protect our clients, they are flexible and offer options.  They were the first to offer an enhanced Travel Waiver Plus in the river cruise industry, which protects our clients with a future cruise credit and refund option.

They instituted a 115% Future Cruise Credit for cancelled cruises, so our clients can reschedule and get an added benefit—more for their money!  The Future Cruise Credits are good until 31 December 2022.

They have also changed final payment date to 60 days prior to sailing, instead of the 90 day normal final payment date.

Perhaps the best part is they are financially stable, with no debt and had a contingency plan in place for a crisis—there is no doubt in our mind they will weather this storm as well as possible with no risk to their clients.  As you read on, you see exactly what I mean.

Let me assure you, we also will remain in business to serve you.  We are resilient and can weather this storm both financially and emotionally.  We will always serve your best interests, as we have always done.

You can trust us and AmaWaterways.

What is a High Performing Organization?

For me, a high performing organization has 7 characteristics.  They are

1) A proper organizational design,

2) Sufficient structure to allow all to contribute to the mission,

3) Processes in place to maximize the talents of all members of the organization,

4) Appropriate use of technology,

5) Good leadership,

6) Skilled and willing people who want to do their best, and

7) A culture that promotes the organizations values.

In the right environment, an organization who excels in these tasks will outperform other similar organizations.  So, using these factors, let’s learn why AmaWaterways excels during these tough times.

I think, when you meet the people of AmaWaterways, you will clearly see why this is our favorite river cruise company and should be yours also!

So, let me introduce to our AmaWaterways Family!

It starts at the Top—Good Leadership—Rudi & Kristin

If you want to talk about great disaster recovery plans, I was amazed at the foresight of Rudi Schreiner, the President of AmaWaterways.  In 2018, with low water causing great concern for river cruising in Europe, he developed a plan for AmaWaterways to survive by worst casing a crisis.  He decided the worst case would be an entire year of river cruising would be cancelled and began to plan for such a contingency.

Rudi with Hank 2011 in the Netherlands—ready for our Tulip Time Cruise

Rudi with Hank 2011 in the Netherlands—ready for our Tulip Time Cruise

Among the plans necessary to survive, he would need to have all his riverships fully paid for, sufficient cash to operate and a plan to keep all his employees.  It would also mean working with the European Union to keep crew available and meet their regulations.  What great vision, now that we are facing exactly what he saw as a possible threat to his company--a sustained period where they could not conduct river cruises safely, AmaWaterways is handling this challenge with solid action and placing guests and employees above profits.

Now, a little bit about Kristin and Rudi.  We have known the two owners since 2011.  We first met on a Tulip Time cruise in the Netherlands.

Our most recent meeting was when they were honored at the 2018 TravelAge West Awards Ceremony.  Kristin and Rudi were honored with the top award of the gala night for a lifetime achievement award for leadership in the river cruise industry and the travel industry.  It was a great night for their company—they won several other awards.

We were proud to be part of it and even prouder to be the only other company to win an award as a couple during the entire award ceremony—all the other winners were individuals.

Travel Age West Awards 2018

Travel Age West Awards 2018

However, as great as awards are recognizing AmaWaterways as a special company, it is the tone they set for the company that makes the difference.  They set out to create a river cruise company they would want to sail on themselves and they have succeeded beyond even their lofty expectations.

I also have to let you know that Kristin Karst is equally important in this company as Rudi and their other partner, Gary Murphy—it is her connection with the staff, the travel agent community and the guests that propels the company to be even better than others.  She and Rudi have created a culture of high expectations, and great travel experiences.

The Company Culture

All the folks who work at AmaWaterways look to exceed your expectations—the culture of the company is consistent excellence, always improving and a genuine desire to make your vacation the best possible.  On a webinar I recently attended, Kristin described the company’s core values—they are partnership (guests and the travel agent community); passion; and prepared.

It is amazing how both clients and travel professionals talk about their experiences with AmaWaterways—words like friendly, proactive, professional, caring, and cool always seem to be used to describe their experiences.

You know this company is on the right track when positive words, unsolicited, are used in interactions with others when talking about river cruise companies and AmaWaterways almost always receives positive accolades

The People of this High Performing Company

What makes this a great company?  It is a combination of good leaders, staff that care and do their job in a superb manner and a fantastic product (great food and wine, luxury accommodations and well-designed excursions and experiences).

From top to bottom, AmaWaterways just does it right.  There is a real emphasis on working together and it shows in all they do.  I will tell you about the crew shortly, but the total organization, that works so hard to deliver good travel experiences, deserves recognition.

It Starts with the Sales Team.

Our Business Development Manager, Shelia Bielich is a gem.  Complete knowledge of the ins and outs of AmaWaterways, she is always there to help.  We did a joint presentation a couple years ago on French river cruises and it was a huge success.  Thanks Sheila!  In these tough times she is rock solid.

The in-house groups department is just outstanding.  We have done small groups for many years, and Yael, Kristie, Jennifer and now Brandon have helped out clients get the best possible deals.  All of these 4 are passionate about great service and going the extra mile.  Thanks folks for being so great!

Next up is the on-board teams.

Cruise Managers

Perhaps no one makes as much difference on your on board experience than the cruise managers.  Their wealth of knowledge is exceptional and they love helping you get the most out of your cruise experience.

After 17 cruises on AmaWaterways, we have loved these unique folks who help us learn more about Europe and their rivers.  Thanks Lilo, Kata (2 cruises), Czaba, Maddy, Dejan (2 cruises), Nikola, Kris (3 cruises), Nick, Rolf, Camille, Edward, and Jessi.

AmaWaterways New Emphasis on the Main and Moselle Rivers--Part 2

AmaWaterways New Emphasis on the Moselle and Main Rivers

By Hank Schrader, USMA ’71, European Destination and River Cruise Expert

www.dreamdestinations.com

Our first Europe river cruise was on the Main and Moselle Rivers in 2009.  It was on AmaWaterways.  As I have written before, I was hooked—for a person who has never taken a Europe river cruise, it is very hard to describe how good it is—I knew what the brochures said, which made it sound awesome, but it was just so much more than I expected!

The key for me was the easy access to so many wonderful sites, that would be difficult to do on your own, and luxury travel aboard the ship facilities, great food and wine all rolled into one package—it was easy and fun.

But that is not the purpose of this blog—the purpose is to tell you about the expanded options to visit the Main River on AmaWaterways.  In last week’s blog, I provided you a complete overview of the 7 routes that AmaWaterways offers on 2 great rivers—the Moselle and the Main.

There are now 3 different route options that explore the Main River area better than any other of the 8 river cruise companies we follow.  We have sailed every part of these 3, as well as the 7 offerings on the Rhine, Main & Moselle Rivers on AmaWaterways that I wrote about last week, and these 2 blogs will provide you some first-hand knowledge of the great ports and experiences you can expect on any one of these cruises.

Imagine sailing on the either of these 2 rivers through the legendary wine growing regions of Germany, getting the chance to sample good German wines, explore quaint villages and visit and tour castles and palaces!

Don’t let the 7 different routes confuse you—many ports are very similar on each route and if you just look at the maps carefully and our pictures, you will quickly get a great overview.  And, as always, we are here to clear up any confusion.

Since there are so many ports involved in these routes, I have organized last weeks blog to provide an overview of the routes of the Moselle and Main Rivers and will provide you in this blog a good description of the ports on the Main.  Last week I concentrated on the ports of the Moselle River.

So let’s sail together on the ports of the German Main River—you won’t be disappointed—it is that good!

Ports on the Main River

Mainz

Mainz is located where the Rhine and Main Rivers meet. About 80% of the city was destroyed in WW II, but they have rebuilt most of the area around market square. It was a major trade center in the Middle Ages. The 2 most famous sites are the huge cathedral and the Gutenberg printing museum—he printed the Gutenberg Bible—also known as the 42-Line Bible, for the number of lines in each column. It also has a famous stained-glass windows by Chagall in the Stephen’s Church.

Miltenberg,

The old town of Miltenberg is about 150 meters wide and 2.5 Km long from the banks of the Main River up the hillside. There are over 100 half-timbered houses in this scenic town. This is a place time seems to have stood still—almost all the older buildings have survived.  Its market square is often cited as one of the most attractive in all of Germany.  And, to just round out the fairly-tale feel of the city, there is a castle perched on a hillside.

Wertheim,

Wertheim is located where the Tauber River and the Main River meet. Overlooking the town are ruins of a castle that was built in the 12th century. The old town and its market square are ringed with several half-timbered houses. This old walled city has an impressive watch tower that still remains.

Würzburg,

Würzburg is located in the heart of Franconia’s wine country. As you move to the town from the port, your first sights are the Marienberg Citadel and the old stone bridge to enter the town. The key sight in Würzburg is the baroque Residenz Palace and its amazing gardens. You should tour the palace—about 40 of the 360 rooms are available for visitors.

Bamberg

Bamberg is about 7 Km from the Main River, in the Upper Franconia region of Bavaria. It has a wonderfully preserved old town area on the west bank of the Regnitz River. Key sights include the Altes Rathaus (old town hall), the Bamberg Cathedral, and the Neue Residenz (home of the prince bishops). Bamberg has a special beer—it is a historic smoked beer.

Rüdesheim

This is a charming wine village. It is famous for the great white wines grown in the region, along with a special coffee drink, aptly named Rüdesheimer coffee (Flambé Asbach brandy, sugar cube, coffee garnished with whipped cream). A lively lane, the Drosselgasse, is lined with taverns and wine-cellars. Nearby is the Germania monument, better known as the Niederwald Monument, erected in 1883 to celebrate the unification of German after their victory over France in the Franco-Prussian War in 1870.

Moselle & Main Routes on the Same Cruise

Europe’s Rivers & Castles (Route 1)

Route Map from AmaWaterways

Route Map from AmaWaterways

There are 15 sailing dates on Europe’s Rivers & Castles route in 2020, which cruises from Nuremberg to Luxembourg.  This is the cruise route we first took on AmaWaterways, and it is just so fun, we have done this route twice.  The second time Anne & I were lucky to lead a group of my West Point classmates and introduce them all to the joys of Europe river cruising.

Depending on the direction you are sailing, the trip begins in either Trier or Nuremberg.  I am describing the cruise starting from Trier.  The only difference in sailing from Nuremberg to Trier is that docking times and days are different–you still get to see the same sights.

The trip starts in Trier, the oldest city in Germany.  It continues through the meandering Moselle River Valley, its steep hillsides covered with vineyards.  The German villages of Bernkastel and Cochem, with their castles overlooking the town below and Zell on the Moselle River make this stretch memorable.

Continuing up river, you’ll enter the Rhine River Gorge.  Many fortresses and castle ruins are strategically placed on the steep hills.  Once these castles served to defend and extract tolls, now they provide beautiful sights—it always makes the best river cruise lists of travel writers.

Along the Main River, a tributary of the Rhine, the stops include medieval towns, often with the half-timbered homes that seem to be untouched by time and important smaller cities that have unique palaces, churches and even the first printing press. The cruise ends after sailing through the Main-Danube Canal to historic Nuremberg.  The ports on the Main River are Rüdesheim (OK, technically it is on the Rhine, near the border of the Main River but since these rivers flow into each other, it is hard to make a clear distinction and really doesn’t matter much to travelers, only geographers), Mainz, Wertheim, Würzburg, Bamberg and it ends in Nuremberg.

Medieval Treasures (Route 2)

Route Map from AmaWaterways

Medieval Treasures is a 7 night cruise from Basel to Nuremberg.  There are 5 sailing dates in 2020, and the AmaWaterways cruise ship is the AmaDante.  On the Rhine, the ports are Strasbourg, Speyer, and Rüdesheim.  On the Main, the ports are Miltenberg, Wertheim, Würzburg, Bamberg and ending in Nuremberg.

One factor about this route—it misses the Rhine River Gorge I wrote about above.

Treasures of the Main & Rhine (Route 3)

Route Map from AmaWaterways

Route Map from AmaWaterways

This is a 7 day cruise, starting from Nuremberg to Amsterdam.  There are 4 ports on the Main River (Wertheim, Würzburg, Bamberg and Nuremberg) and 3 ports on the Rhine (Rüdesheim, Cologne and Amsterdam).  It does sail through the Rhine River Gorge.

Our Rhine, Main & Moselle River Port Guides

A unique feature for you that we make available to you for free is to learn about these ports with our Rhine River Cruise Port Guides (there are 25 total for the Rhine & its tributaries—8 on the Rhine; 8 on the Main; 5 on the Moselle and 4 for the Northern Tulip Time ports).  It is really easy to get them—just use the button below, and fill out the short request form and we will send these guides.  We have a total of 51 River Cruise Port Guides on our website that you can order—trust me, there is nothing like all these to our knowledge available on the web in one place and they are all our pictures.  It should help you decide if this is the right cruise for you and also help you decide on which tour to take at each port stop.

My Final Thoughts

One of these routes that should be on everyone’s bucket list, in my opinion.  Please let us know if there is anything we can do to help you to start this or any other river cruise trip.  We have a wealth of free information about all Europe river cruises and really useful river cruise tips on our website www.dreamdestinations.com, so check us out—you will be glad you did.

Bordeaux River Cruise Ports

Bordeaux River Cruise Ports

By Hank Schrader, USMA ’71, Europe Destination & Europe River Cruise Expert

www.dreamdestinations.com

I write all the time about Europe river cruising and its value.  One of the newer routes on the Europe river cruise offerings is on the Bordeaux Estuary Area.  We took an AmaWaterways cruise in 2017 and it was truly unique and, in many ways, different from past river cruises.

Why was it different?—the main reason is there is so much emphasis on wine, wine production and how wine has impacted this area.

I plan to tell you a little about the Bordeaux wine region in general and then highlight some of the port stops.  I am not including the starting and ending port of Bordeaux—it deserves a future blog.

Although not the theme of this blog, I would be remiss if I didn’t laud our hosts, AmaWaterways on our “A Taste of Bordeaux” cruise.  AmaWaterways is our top rated Europe River Cruise Line and, as always, they delivered on our 16th cruise with this great company (we are going on #18 later this year).  It was a special wine themed cruise and a very good trip option, especially if you like wine.

Our Route Map—Diagram from AmaWaterways

Our Route Map—Diagram from AmaWaterways

So, let me defend my thoughts—why go on this cruise?

The Bordeaux Wine Region

To really understand the Bordeaux region, and the huge impact wine has on the region, a little background might prove helpful for you.  The origin of term Bordeaux derives from the French phrase “bord des eaux”—on the edge of the waters.  The Bordeaux region is dominated by 3 great rivers—where the Dordogne and the Garonne meet to form the Gironde.

Wine Areas of Bordeaux—Diagram form AmaWaterways

Wine Areas of Bordeaux—Diagram form AmaWaterways

Bordeaux wines are blended wines.  The permissible grapes that can be used in red Bordeaux are Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Petit Verdot.  There are also white Bordeaux wines produced, but the vast majority of wines are red wines.

Bordeaux is France’s and the world’s largest wine producing area.  There are about 287,500 acres of vineyards.  The area has over 900 chateaus, and about 10,000 individual producers.  89% of the grapes are red plantings, so the remaining 11% are white grapes.

The terroir of Bordeaux impacts the wine characteristics and some believe it is the perfect region to grow grapes to produce the highest quality wines in the world.  It is at 45 degrees north and has a temperate, maritime climate.  The weather conditions are moderated by 3 factors.  First, the Gulf Stream effects the temperature.  Second, the coastal pine forests, protect from high winds.  Third, the Gironde estuary, the Dordogne and Garonne Rivers, provide humidity and temper the temperatures during growing seasons.

2 Ports were About a Castle, a walled city and a Fortress.

Our first stop was a walking tour of Cadillac.  Founded in 1280, there are still some of the medieval walls and gates remaining that once protected this port city.

After the visit to Cadillac, we took a short bus ride to Roquetaillade Castle.

Roquetaillade in French means carved out of rock.  There has been a fortification on this site since Charlemagne constructed an earth and timber defensive position during his advance to the Pyrenees.

In the port of Blaye, we visited the imposing Blaye fortress.  The most famous site in Blaye is the Blaye Citadel. The Citadel is a military complex designed by Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban, the famous French military engineer.

The main sights in Libourne are the town hall and square (Place Abel Surchamp), the Museum of Fine Arts & Archeology, the Church of St. John the Baptist and the Rue Gambatta, a pedestrian only street.  Sadly, we were not able to visit these sites, as we chose to go on a wine tasting—something to look forward to on our next cruise here.

There are many famed Chateaux wineries around Libourne. We visited Chateau de La Riviere near Fronsac, France for a good wine tasting.  This is a dramatic wine estate worth a visit for a tasting and tour.

The stately Chateau

Chateau de La Riviere is the largest vineyard in Fronsac, with about 59 hectares planted with vines and 6 hectares beautiful gardens, and forest lands.  It is planted with 82% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 4-5% Cabernet Franc grapes.

It produces primarily red Bordeaux wines, between 15,000 to 18,000 cases per year.  Most of their red wines have strong dark red fruit flavors during tastings but this can vary.  They also produce a white wine.

St Emilion

We first took a tour of this city and the underground church.  St. Emilion is known for its great wines and the underground church started by Emilion, a Breton monk.  The monolithic church is a UNESCO World Heritage site.  There are about 124 miles of underground areas under the streets of St. Emilion.

Bourg

Bourg is pleasant and picturesque small town perched on the banks of the Dordogne River.

Local sites include: The citadel castle, with its horse-drawn carriage museum "Au temps des calèches", French formal gardens and terrace overlooking the lower town and surrounding landscapes:  the Moorish house built in the 18th and 19th centuries; the 18th-century Jurade mansion complete with a bell tower; the covered market; 19th-century wash house and the river harbor.

We again, didn’t have time to see these, as we attended a wine festival during our AmaWaterways cruise at the House of Wines. It was a lot of fun and we had a small band in period clothing to help us celebrate.

Pauillac

There are not many key sites to visit in the port of Pauillac, since the main attraction here is the world famous region of Medoc and their outstanding wines.  In Pauillac, the sites of interest include the large 19th century Church of Saint-Martin, and the 19th century market hall.

The church of St. Martin

It is the wine estates of the region that most come to see and taste while here.  They include Chateau Lafite-Rothschild, Chateau Latour, Chateau Margaux and Chateau Mouton Rothschild, the most recognized wines from the Bordeaux region.  These 4 wines all are “Premier Cru” (first growth)—the best of the best in the region.

We visited Chateau Leoville Payferre to taste 4 great wines.  Chateau Leoville Payferre, located in the St. Julien region of Medoc, and produces highly acclaimed Bordeaux red wine on their 60 hectare estate.

They have planted 68% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

According to Jeff Leve (editor of The Wine Cellar Insider), who focuses on Bordeaux wine, Chateau Leoville Payferre is “one of the most consistent producers of high quality Bordeaux since 2000.  They make so many great wines, it is hard to pick a favorite.”

We tasted 4 wines.  They were:  Chateau Moulin Riche 2016 (barrel sample); Chateau Moulin Riche 2011—30 Euros per bottle; Chateau Leoville Payferre 2012—80 Euros per bottle and Chateau Leoville Payferre 2000—220 Euros per bottle.

I included the price per bottle just to show you how good the quality of the wines were we tasted—if you can command those prices in the market place, these are great wines!

My Final Thoughts

Wow—what a trip!  I think now you can see how much wine has on this region—it’s not about the sites so much, it is about wine and the wine growing culture.  The forts and walled cities grew up to protect the wine producers and are not as much a reason to visit this area as the great wines—if you really enjoy wine, this trip is for you!
